EX..

Alright I've been debating for what seems like weeks now on what to spool my EXs with. I know its going to be Jerry Brown but for the life of my I cannot make a decision on 65 or 80. For its stock drag rating 65 is suffiecient but if I bump it to 30 then the 80 would come into play.. I'm leaning towards the 65 currently mostly because thats the same thing I run on my LXs and if I pick up a 2500 yard spool of Jerry Brown I can spool at least a 2 of them along with the exs.. Any suggestions?

Re: EX..

Spool with 80. That reel will easily make 30# of drag.

I've got the N and I'm leaning towards 80, possibly 100lb. Remember, with spectra you don't have the buffer like you do with mono and most flouro's. 65lb is going to break right around 65.

Re: EX..

I use my EX 4/0s for two different things and have them set up a bit odd. The spools are filled about 1/2 to 2/3 with 80lb, then I spliced a loop in the end. When using them for Pacific halibut I put a "mid shot" of 300yds of 65lb and a 10' topshot of 50lb mono. When fishing down south I take the 65 lb off and replace it with 200yds of 80lb Spectra and a 100' mono topshot of whatever pound I need.

My EX30 is filled with 80lb hollow.

Up here in Oregon I prefer to use 65lb Spectra due to the depth we are usualy fishing, 500' and deeper, and the drift. 65lb has far less water resistance than 80lb. Seting up like this is a little work but my time is cheep.

Re: EX..

I'll have to eat my words. I just put a crap load of 130lb Berkley Hollow on mine. If I find my 80 Flouro, I'll throw a loop to loop topper on it.

Yardage was just over a buttload to a buttload and a half. The line counter, uh, broke, yeah, that's it. It broke while putting line on. The 130 BigGame hollow is thin, smooth, and opens up easy for splicing.

I have not ordered the cam and don't think I'm going to need it. I'm not even sure what I'm going to fish this for. I'm thinking 60-80lb but I want it on a longer stick (I think). Maybe a 700H for 50lb? Anyway, the 130 will be more than enough. I'm getting tired of paying for spectra I might not ever see.

Re: EX..

Order the cam, the new one ramps up nicer than the original one. With my narrow EX4/0 set at 33lb on strike I'm getting just a bit over 40lb on full with the new cam and 37lb with the older cam. The new cam eliminates the first hump and engages better too. On full I'm getting a bit of a load on the handle but it's acceptable.

BTW, I finally got off my ass and calibrated my drag scale, with certified weights, and these are good drag numbers. Not too bad for a 50/60lb class reel.

Re: EX..

Thanks Dayle, I am trying to justify another EX while they are being discontinued. May just wait til a good used one comes up.

With the mods Alan and Lee have been doin', I plan on using one for 80#, so 100# hollow spectra will be used.

Lee, I am goin' to pick up my parts from Bob today and monkey with the EX some more.

Re: EX..

CabbageKey has a few silver narrows and gold or black wides. Discontinued or not, I can not justify another reel.

Alan is the one that deserves the "blame", I just took what he did a did a bit further.

THANKS ALAN!!!

DZ,
I "need" a few more reels but it'll have to wait. My next one will be a 40 followed by 2 MXL single speed reels.
