Re: January '07 Avet Contest

Jason,

Is this how to do this?

Cliff

Texans invaded Venice LA the weekend of January 13--14, 2007. Six of us aboard Captain Eddie Burger's Tuna Loco for some Yellow Fin Fishing on the Lump. 4 Newbies and 2 of us experienced.

My buddie Brad caught his first and only Tuna on my Avet Pro 50 SDS. Rigged with Jerry Brown 130 / 80# top shot and a 100# Flurocarbon leader. Took him about an hour using a Braid Brute Buster Harness and Belt.

Other Yellow Fins included: Bill's 139# and my 107# plus 8 others averaging about 60 lbs.

Two nice Wahoo---29# and 66# with some big amber jacks and a 260 lb. hammerhead (released).

The Avet Pro 50 SDS caught over half the nice fish we boated in two days. Brad's comment on my Avet compared ot the Shimono 30's and 50's on the boat was, "This is one fine piece of machinery and if I was to invest beyond my bay water gear it would have to be an Avet like this. This truly got the job done".

I was hoping to break that 150# mark myself but what a great day to have freinds catch great fish on my Avet Pro 50 SDS.

Hope the contest continues.

Got to the 9 at 6pm with 5 other boats. Was slow going until about 8pm and it went wide open with 12-15 boats working the same spot. It was so cool hearing everyone yelling, laughing, high fives having a great time. Everyone was hooked up!!! After about 15 squid we headed back. We were rolling over BIG meter marks and 5miles from Mission Bay we stopped to pull on some more. Instant hook up at 150feet. Those things were pulling 18lbs of drag on my Avet exw pro 30 and putting a some major bend in my seeker 659xxxh sooo much fun!!! I guess I was cheating after the first 3-4 of em cuz I put on my harness and in low gear just grind em in. We must have caught at least 30 of them between me and Alex. Took a little work to release them without getting wet. Alex had one that was pissed and hit him three times with a full jet stream of water must have been 7gallons right in the face I havent laughed that hard in a long time. I left one hanging to get a video of it and another one came up and hit it a couple of times. It latched on to the one that was hanging and with in 45sec it ate right through the neck of the other squid and took off with the body

AVET TO THE RESCUE !

My son Matt and I had a few days to go to PV to check our boat and get in a little fishing last week. The rains stopped just as we arrived on Thursday. We called Tony and set up a fishing day for Saturday. By Saturday, the sun was out and the ocean had laid down. It was beautiful.

Once again, the skipjacks were scarce, so we used our caballitos. It was a very slow day for every one. By mid afternoon, most of the boats were on their way back in to the dock with few tuna. The largest one was in the 40# range.

We stayed out and continued to try for something. Suddenly, one of our older set ups went off. Line was peeling off the reel at a rapid rate, so we knew that a good size fish was on the line. Matt grabs the pole and starts the fight. After about 30 minutes he says that he wished that the fish had hit his new 50 Avet on his birthday Calstar rod. Not more than 10 minutes after saying that his wish came true! The “other” reel suddenly snapped right off the rod. It broke in the exact same place that another reel of the same model had on a long range trip we had taken a few years ago.

Now we had a big tuna on a broken reel. What to do? We looked at Matt’s new Avet and asked Tony if he could tie a knot quickly enough to attach the fish line to the Avet line before we lost the fish. Tony said yes. We let the fish have quite a bit of free spool line as he was already quite well hooked. Matt held the free spool line. I cut the line off the old reel as soon as Tony was ready. He quicky tied the knot as the fish was using up the free spool line and Matt was yelling for him to hurry. The knot was completed in time!

Matt finished the fish with his Avet and could not believe the difference between the two reels as he reeled in his 150# trophy tuna.

He now knows first hand that you can always bet on Avet to get the job done right.

Gear used:Avet LX with 80# spectra with Exori Tuna Stick.
Bait:Live bonito.

It was the beggining of the new year & it's Wahoo & Sailfish season in the Indian Ocean. We decided to troll for the pelagics, initially we caught a small bonito & quickly rigged it up as live bait & began our slow troll .....after trolling about 10 mins, the ratchet began cliicking like crazy, knowing that it was a sailfish,we allowed it to run for 30secs & suddenly gave it a jerk to set the hook.Within minutes we could see the sailfish dancing, trying to shake off the hook, what an awesome sight,it jumped 03 times. It was spectacular. This being my first time reeling in a sailfish I was a bit nervous.....It took me about 30 mins to reel it in.The sailfish weighed 60 lbs.The biggest fish I ever caught so far......
Avet reels made to reel in the biggies.....

Cheers.
Roney.

Re: January '07 Avet Contest

The sailfish is badass, but Mattray's pic is excellent(especially since he's wearing an Accurate shirt while holding up an Avet after having what can only be a TLD break on him) and Cliff's Tuna is HUGE!!!!! Glad I don't make the call on these!!!
