HIgh Gear Better then low Gear??

Hi guys i have plann to get a Avet MXJ, but dont know what gear should i get the 4.6:1 or 6:1? Do u guys think low gear is better then high?? I know people say get 2-speed, but i dont use it that often i just use it for pier fishing. So i am just planning to get one speed. So what u guys think is better?

The 6.1... That's only because I own one, and I love it... Whatever your fishing for from the pier it will handle...

It really depends on what you are using the reel for and what kind of bait/lure presentation you are using. If you are using bait and/or ever get into larger fish, get the lower ratio. If you are using lures, get the higher ratio.

Re: HIgh Gear Better then low Gear??

Get a 2 speed and your problem is solved. If its not in the budget get the 6:1.

Re: HIgh Gear Better then low Gear??

I have a number of ProGear reels with 4:1 gear ratios. I use these for tuna and yelowtail when I do not need a fast retrieve. They allow me to put more pressure on the fish. I also have a couple of Toriums that have 6:1 gear ratios - they are for cranking iron quickly. The same logic applies to your Avet choice. My new Avet LX 6/4 nicely does both in the same reel! For $100 more you get two reels at once.

Re: HIgh Gear Better then low Gear??

Yeah i have to agree, the two speed is the best bet if it is in the price range. there are times when it helps to put more pressure on the fish and you can change gears immediately to get the result you need. if the one speed is all the pocketbook can make possible then pick both up and spin them to see which feels better to you. because at that point it is like comparing apple and oranges. both work great and have their finer points. it is just with saltwater fishing you never know what your going to pull up. they will both work fine and your gonna love either one you end up choosing. the only other thing i thought about while writing is that when you are fishing from the pier there is alot of space between you and the water and being able to get the fish over the rail faster may be more desireable, in that case the 6:1 would be the best bet for you. like i said though, you gonna love either one, and you pleanty of time to get more avets in the future and secure your place as an avet ho later.
