10 hour fight on EXW4/02?

Did some sharking out of Montauk, Long Island on Sat and hooked up with a huge fish on my new EXW. We fought it stand up for 10 hours at full drag before the 60# momoi diomond top shot broke and we never even came close to seeing this fish. My question is, is the drag washer still gonna be ok after that much pressure for such a long time?

Dude, have you even fished that thing yet. And he was fishing 60lb mono, I don't see how the TRX would have made a difference in this fight.

Did the topper break near the fish? AKA, was it abrasion on something or did it just break mid-line VS a bad knot or something?

BTW, you do not need a TREX for this. What was your drag setting for 60lb? 15-20lbs at strike? A standard 30 Avet could do that all day. The TREX is for the heavy line.

It broke down the line due to abrasion, and the drag was at full the entire fight. When we got back we tested it and it was at 33lbs. 60lb diomond breaks around 90 so we cranked the drag up knowing that the line could take it.

Dude, sounds like a great fish! Abrasion has nothing to do with the reel. 33lbs of drag on 60lb sounds like you might have backed things off a bit.

Even when it the true breaking strenght is 92lbs? According to the 1/3 rule 33lbs should be fine right?

i typically set my drags to 1/4 of the breaking strength at strike and then lable my reels every 5lbs after that through full. be carefull with diamond line because it is not always what they make it out to be i had some 30 this year that is suppose to break at 50 and consistantly broke at 32 or 33. itd be interesting to check the break strength of ur line as compaired to whats advertised

tie on a new topshot and give the line a tug. if it's smooth, you're good to go.
