Re: September '06 Avet Contest

Went out of Port Aransas, Texas on September 6 for a mixed bag of Red Snapper and Blackfin Tuna. My little JX Avet showed it's strength and landed five BF and a limit of quality snapper to 20 pounds.
It was a fair day on the pond.

Here is a picture of my 13 year old son. He caught this Yellowtail on the Pacific Voyager on September 1st, 2006. He saved up his money to buy this Avet LX 6/3 and was determined that his first fish on the new rig would be caught ont he iron and low and behold he did it. 14 of them to be precise. Hee's Caleb and the first fish on the new rig!

Not having fished as much in the past year than what we normally do, Bill and I did the Charkbait 4 day aboard the Red Rooster III.
I have been to the lupe twice before, and had my sights set on a personal best yellowfin (my largest being 35#) or one of those larger than life yellowtail. The lupe has been off and on with a slow pick at best, but I was still hoping to head straight to the island. Andy Cates brought us all to the galley and it was a go to Guadalupe.
Suggested tackle was 40# and a light reel that had the freespool to get out to the zone.
Day 1, was a slow pick, I had one pick up and a hook pull. The end of the day, I was fishless.
Day 2, I switched to a little heavier outfit, got picked up but the knot broke (I didn't tie it, at least cant be mad at myself for that). Julio the second ticket asked me "where is that little outfit you had yesterday? I went back to my now favorite set up the little avet 2 speed on my shikari.
It freespools out of the box better than most reels on the boat, able to get out to the "zone" quick. I AM ON.
Took me up the rail and sat tight in the bow for about 10 minutes, back down then back up the rail for another 10, then it was the slow circle to the gaff.
I did it. 59# yellowfin, I had my personal best.
The time then came for my kite rotation, and I asked if I could switch to my reel (lefties you know) for the kite. Avet Pro EX 4/02. Indeed. They tied on the double trouble sardine rig, up on the balloon and no sooner did the bait hit the water when the crash hit.
Wind, Wind Wind, and I am on. This one kept me on the stern and in about 10 minutes, a 57#er hits the deck.

Total count for the boat was only about 47 tuna for 25 people in two days. Andy said "if you got 1, you are lucky, if you got two you did REALLY well."

Re: September '06 Avet Contest

My Avets rock, the MXL has got to be the most versatile inshore/offshore reel ever built. I've caught everything from barndoor halibut to Yellowfin Tuna now.

Thanks Avet for a solid, affordable, dependable product.

I fished all summer on my 36' uniflite walkaround using avet 30's and 50's to catch Blue and Black marlin from 300 to 700lbs and this tuna that taped out at 335lbs.The fish took 4 hours to land on that 50exw with the smoothest drag system I have used.

September 16th @ 10:00 am.

Bought this one right when they came out and have since bought three more. Avet is the best bang for the buck and they give a crap unlike other fishing companies.
We worked with bad weather while driving into the swell, and still got three Yellowfin.
Daivs Tourney. We placed fourth. Love my Avet Reels! Rough weather.
Thanks for a great tournament as usual, Harold Davis. Thank you Avet Reels. Thanks Nate for buying a Daivs and letting us ride on it! Thank you McCormack Auction Company, Josh(619) 447 1196 (to sell your real estate the better way) for your support. Thank you Hawthorne Equipment for your support as well. Yes, we actually got sponsorship for the second year in a row! Oh, and Go Chargers! Raiders still suck!

Re: September '06 Avet Contest

Here is my picture for September, not a great one, and not a winner, but gotta submit something so you'll know I actually fish for tuna and don't just talk about it. A trip on the "Big E" out of Freeport, Texas, September 15-17, for Yellowfin Tuna. This is one of three Yellow Fin Tuna I put in the boat, this was on an Avet JX 6/3 and Yozuri Surface Crusier on a 700H. Most of these 2-day trips are targeting Yellowfin Tuna at night around the deepwater oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. On this trip 35 anglers brought in over 120 Yellow Fin Tuna, between 50 to 118lbs, almost all caught on topwater plugs. Blackfin tuna were available in seemingly endless numbers on butterfly style jigs. Highlight of this trip was "Snagged" hooking a 92lb BigEye on a 14oz jig! Look for Snagged's submission earlier in this month's photos. BTW, this trip was named the Texas Bluewater Blowup '06, and lived up to it's moniker!

Next trip is in October, so hopefully I'll have some better pictures to submit. Goal for next trip is to pull in a 50-70lb Yellow Fin Tuna on a Purple Avet SX!!

Re: September '06 Avet Contest

Foot ball sized Yellow Fin Tuna.
Around the 213.
Saturday the 16.
The first fish on my new AVET LX with a 7 ft west coast black series CAL STAR rod purchased at fisherman landing, also my first Yellow Fin Tuna. We stopped at a pretty good sized patty. We were getting a nice yellow tail bite so we made another drift at the pattie. I throw my dine out and instant bendo on the rod. I thought it was a Yellowtail but when I got it to the surface
I could tell it was a Yellow Fin Tuna. Fast fish thogh, it would go from side of the boat to the other within 10 secs, my line making a zipping noise as it was hitting the water great fight, got him in under five mins. Picked up a second Yellow Fin Tuna, and 1 Yellowtail.Great reel, Im hooked on avets now.

I was working on the Sea Trek out of Oceanside. Everyone was fishing the bottom for a slow pick on bass so I decided to flyline a bait. I casted out a little mackeral and within 20 seconds I got picked up. Fought it for about 12 minutes before my biggest Yellowtail to date came to gaff. I was so stoked.

September '06 Avet Contest-pargo-avet.jpg

This MONSTER was caught on 9/21 (5:00 PM) at the Rock (PV, Mexico) while drifting a Skippie over the high spot. As pictured, it was caught on Avet EXW 50/2 on a Calstar 7460H (custom wrapped by Yo's) with an 18/0 Eagle Claw Circle Hook, using 100lb Izorline. I was aboard the Marla II with Captain Danny Osuna at the helm, with Alvino Osuna on the deck. The fish is in the 50+lb category. You can see the full story on the Mainland Mexico Board. This fish rocked another angler a day or two prior given the 12/0 hyabusa circle hook that was found in it's stomach (hook had no rust on it) while we were cleaning it. This was a tough SOB but after winding and grinding him off the bottom, got him to the boat in less than 10 minutes.

Got to love the Quality of the Photos. Its time that a Pargo win this monthly contest????
