Location: Near the 238 @ 31.30/117.15
Gear used: Avet Blue SX, Blue Seeker Inshore II 658, 20lb P-Line blue, 1/0 Owner ringed circle hook, 6' Mac nose hooked
Date: 7/4/06
GF and I left Coral at 6:30 with the macs made at the slip heading for the warm water 40 miles out. 68 or less till 238 @ 31.30/117.15 we start to find paddies and temp is climbing to 69.5.
Made two drifts on a large paddy for nada and were about to move on when I dropped a blue/silver butterfly jig deep and all hell broke loose. Yellowtail were on the chew boiling around the boat and bait was now working as well. The BF jig was outfishing the bait 3/1, Yellowtail's were 8 - 15lbers so we C&R'd keeping a few larger ones.
After 45 min of this we moved on and found another large paddy 1/2 mile away with schools of Yellowtail under it. We had fun for 2 hours. Nothing over 18 lbs but good C&R on the smaller ones. While resetting for another drift I slow trolled the bait stick and felt a hit while running the lower controls as I turned around we see this Dorado jumping and doing the tail walk across our stern...WAHOOOOO! He only went 12lbs (in 69.5 water) but hey, it made my day.

We were paddy hopping and it was pretty wide open on Yellowtail and I kept on getting broken off on my Japanese reel. So I switched to my brand new MXL 6.1 that my kids got me for Father's Day! Started putting them on the boat! First time out with it, and now it's my lucky reel. Thanks kids. BTW, that color combination of Blue AVET and Gold/Teal Calstar is PIMP.

| Re: July '06 Avet Reel Contest Name: Kristina Wagen Location: off coast of Cedros Islands (approx 220 miles out of Point Loma) caught on a 5 day trip on the American Angler (7/9-7/14). Gear Used: Purple MXL 2speed with 35 lb Clear P-Line; 7ft Calstar GF765XL 20/50 Wrapped custom for me by Mike Bernard @ M&N Custom Fishing Rods in Bakersfield Ca. Date: fish caught 7/11/2006 Fishing Report: We just made a nice long run of patty stops on the way down to Cedros the day before. Ended up there a little behind what we had planned. woke up at 6:30 to breakfast and a nice mixed bite at the island. i had been using my rig of choice, the MXL 2speed and the 20/50 Calstar, flylining anchovies in the am. I took the advice of the great crew and used a greenback mackeral, and got a huge hit by this fish. well as you see much to everyones excitement especially mine, i caught this 37lb yellowtail. the guys on the trip were great and i have to give much of the credit to them as i learned so much on that trip. *just a funny update since posting this picture. i went on this trip with my husband and best buddy Randy. he works as a firefighter with the u.s. forest service. if you know much about the organization, probably the least paid firefighters anywhere, that love their job around. no joke. so, since being back from that great trip, (other pics from the trip are in the gallery under "nicetail"), i printed the pic's out for him to take to work to show the guys. now all the guys have been giving him sh*t, saying that his wife outfished him. it is true i caught more fish, and hauled in alot bigger fish than he did. but it is not about that, it is about the fun of doing something we both enjoy together. he enjoys a friendly rivalry or competition just as i do. but we both had fun, i learned alot, and both felt pride in what we acomplished during the trip. besides, let's face it, if he had caught as many fish at the same size as i had, our fish processing bill would be twice as much, and were already broke from this trip!!! Competition is great, just have fun in whatever you do! |

Michael Blumenfeld
58# bluefin caught on the Independence 7/5/06. Trip dates 7/4-7/9.
Offshore 150 miles south of San Diego
Used an MXL 6/4 on a grafighter 850M.
Line test 30# with a short 30# fluoro leader.
Fish ate a flylined sardine that was butt hooked
This was the first fish I hooked on this rod and reel. It was truly a shock for me when the tuna came to gaff. Judging by the fight I assumed this was a 20# class fish. This setup caught several more tuna of similar size to this one and about 5 Yellowtail to 30# without breaking a sweat. This is now my favorite setup for fish in this size range.
