All Avet reels

Just wondering why the Avet have lots of forward and reverse movement on the reel handle when holding the spool firmly. You don't get any rocking movement when trying this on Accurate, Trinidad or Saltiga reels. They are firm with no slack. Also, the others like Trinidad and Saltiga's feel smoother when cranking. I have SX, MX, LX, JX, Pro 30 and SDS50. They are great values and can put the wood to any fish. They are my number one arsenal to date. Although I fish the Trinidad 20 and Saltiga 30 equally as much.

Re: All Avet reels

Smaller Avets, like a JX 6/3 exert drag pressure by side loading a bearing, the more drag you run, the more you load that bearing, and it's harder to turn the handle. If the bearing is in good condition, the increased pressure to turn the handle is minimal. If the bearing is defective, the effort to turn handle is noticebly increased, and you need to replace that bearing, under warranty. On a larger Avet, like a Pro EX 30/02, the amount of drag pressure you run doesn't affect the pressure to turn the handle at all.
Avet anti-reverse systems are dogs that lock gears Interlocking gears always have some play, and if you hold the spool, and move the handle, there's always some "take up" as the gears lock up with pressure. Not a problem, anti-reverse dogs are substantial and you're never going to shear one, or break one. A lever drag engages gradually, not instantly, like a star drag. Even if a 75# wahoo takes your bait at 50 m.p.h., the shock won't break the anti-reverse dogs, ever.
Trinidad's have an "instant- on" anti-reverse, where a tiny, not very strong, dog, which isn't securely mounted, instantly engages the pinion gear, no play, but they frequently break, or shear off, and you're done fishing. Shimano has a variety of "factory" updates/upgrades to try to fix this design flaw.
The only Accurates I've tried were a 12, and a 30, both 2-speeds. They both had take up play, same or worse than Avet, and their shifting from high to low, under load, sometimes seized up, locking the spool, and again you're done fishing, and a factory re-build is required.

Re: All Avet reels

BTW Doc, thanks for getting me to try that ABA! That's good stuff. Found it down at Tom's Farm. Seeing that constant sign on you post stuck with me and I tried it. Spendy stuff but after a bottle or three, I'm pretty much full. Good stuff.

Thanks for pointing out you already have 2 30's too you HO!

Re: All Avet reels

Sounds like a bad bearing, and a lot of salt residue inside, box it and return to Avet, they'll have it back to you in 10 days.
