MXJ Drags

What kind of #'s are you guys/gals gettin' out of your MX's at strike and full with 30+ seconds of freespool???

I tore mine down(like a dumbass, without checking what the #'s were) and now can only get 6# at strike and barely 9# with good freespool.

I did grease the drag washer, but I also did my LX and had no problems getting the #'s.

Thanks

Re: MXJ Drags

alan,

They are ()().

I tried (()), but it made the stack thinner and the clicker gear rubs on the side plate.

Re: MXJ Drags

Did you get the cam on correctly? Crank it down hard and put the lever to strike. If it pops, then you need to reseat the cam.

I get around 12# with good freespool.

ok, we've created another monster! you need one of these 6 inch calipers. they were $20 at at my local el cheapo auto parts store.

Click the image to open in full size.

order up a couple of cupped belleville washers and a couple of flat washers from avet. you need to measure out the height of the belleville's in the "()()" configuration and find the right combination of washers that gives you the same height. possibilities include "|(())", or "((())" or "|((((" or "(((((" . this last combination is the stiffest, and may result in the drag pressure ramping too quickly. keep us posted. alan

Re: MXJ Drags

Once you are sure that you have wiped all the grease off the business side of your drag washer and pressure plate as well as installed the proper belleville configuration... Make sure you aren't trying to set the cast control for some line out adjustment/live bait pretension. That feature of the reel compromises the drag by reducing it 30-40% i.e. very similar to the drag numbers you are observing... You can have cast control or advertised drag pressures, just not both. If you tighten your cast control knob so that you have some "appreciable" pressure in the "bait" setting, (about two to four clicks more than you have now) this will yield the advertised drag pressures (nine and fourteen pounds I think). Hope this helps. Kevin

Re: MXJ Drags

Well I tore it down again and checked for grease on the brake disk and drag washer, cleaned them to be sure. Checked the cam position, lever moved fine. Put it back together. 30 seconds of freespool, 8# at strike and 11 at full. Works for me, since I'm fishin' 25-30# on it.

I don't think I will be burnin' the midnight oil doing reel servicing, something about being tired and making sure things are put back together correctlyslap:

Thanks for the tips.

On a side note, I did my year old LX6/3 and got it right the first time Ended up with 34 seconds of freespool with 14# at strike and 18# at full. I also did my new JX6/3 and got 38 sec. of freespool with 13# at strike and 18# at full.

Alan,

Yes it is. I don't know what I did different, but it worked.
