Weight??
135 lb spectra reel capacity??
Cranking power: how does compare to the 50W.
Will the 30 avet crank the same as the 50W?
Penns 30's have great drag, but don't compare to the 50's or 80's when it comes to cranking up circlcling tuna. Same with the Avet??
Drag: is max freespool drag 35 lbs out of the box?
Has anyone tried em with greased drags? What their maximum drag set up this way?

It cranks like a champ. I mean it's not an Avet 50W, but it's got balls.
We checked the drags at Noah's... 42# with free, 47# balls out.
Grease the drags? Why? Take care of the friggin reel (I like to shower with mine, but that's a personal thing) and you don't need no stinkin grease.
As for weight, I left my Avet brouchure at work... It's a lot like the 4/0, but maybe a little heavier.
You'll be happy as hell with this reel.

Would you want the 50W or 30W for PV cows?

Since you're not tied to a 105 foot boat (or so I am assuming), a case could be made for either reel... Josh fishes both, but when the cows are known to be there, he goes with the 5/0. He fishes high drag, so angler strength is a big matter in the equation.
Your call on the cows... I would fish the 5/0 if it were me.

Thanks
Still would like to know the weight difference between the two, and a way to quantify Cranking Power.
There has to be a math relation beteen spool diameter, gear ration and handle length. Perhaps
CP = (handle lever radius X freespool max drag) divided by ( gear ratio X spool diameter 80% full)

I believe the 30W with smaller diameter spool, has same overall ratio [cranking power], as 50, even though 50 has lower gear, larger diameter spool. But, if you're worried, a longer 50 handle [$15] will give you all the "cranking power" you'll ever need. Greasing drags is for reels with jerky, inconsistant, drags, with wavy drag discs, and inferior drag washer material, not Avet! I got 400 yards of Izor 135# hollow spectra, with 100 yards of Izor 80# mono, or 100# mono. Mine scaled 42# at strike, completely smooth and consistant, plenty of drag for anything! Casts a sardine VERY well.

Jeff i think the 30W is better for flylinning baits or fishing lures or small live baits...if you're looking for a reel to troll skipjack around i'd go with the 50 or 50W...you'll recover a lot more line running down a fish with the larger arbor on the 50...
The first fish we caught on the first 30's off the machine was a 283 with Sarkis and Harry so the reels definitely started off on the right foot...we've caught many big tuna and marlin on the 30's and they have performed flawlessly...they are a great all around reel for medium to XL size fish...

If you go 30's, make sure you pack a lot of spectra on the reel. It can take 700 yards of 130# no problem.
The big marlin can dump that line like it was nada.

I'd use a 50N.

How does the EX 30W compare to the 30VSW in terms of physical size and line capacity? I know the drag capabilities are materially superior.

Go with the Penn!!!! The new vsw's are bitchen.
My local shop here in Ventura get so many Avets back with problems and they wont carry them anymore. My buddy bought a MXL and used it only a few times, washing after every use, and is already havin problems with it cranking. The local shop im refering to, took a brand new avet out of the box and put it on the line winder only to have it jam before even being used.
Would u rather trust a company thats been making the standard in big game reels for 30+ yrs (Penn) or would you go for the new company that just started (Avet)
You can tell me all you want about your little avets but penn has been around and still makes the best reel around!
By the way, whats up with avet quad and its 100# of drag. When the hell am i gonna use 100# of drag, it would rip my skinny ass off the boat. Thats retarded, just a sale pitch for a shitty reel.
