cleaning avets

Saw a post on a guy washing his avets in the dishwasher, said it worked for cleaning his spectra down to the spool, any thoughts on this?

Thanks Tony

Yeah... My wife will kill me when she sees 9 (oh wait I meant 10) Avet's in the dishwasher. slap: slap: slap: I bought my 5/0W today and am taking a break from spooling it now.

Sounds reasonable, but I would assume that it would wash some of the oils out of the reel, and that's a problem. Where's RickO when you need him?

Re: cleaning avets

I would say it might even work a bit better for you to give the line/spool a little Salt-X bath (just spray it on really good and let it soak through). Then when it dries (it gets a bit sticky when it's dry) , just take the hose with a pressure sprayer and spray it off really really really good.....works like a charm.....that's what I do.

Re: cleaning avets

You are supposed to be able to set the reels in the dishwasher racks in there normal upright position, run a regular wash cycle to clean and remove all salt residues. Do not run the reels thru the dry cycle! The original post was by Rex, Old and in the way

So, normal wash cycle in the upright, but NO dry cycle?? I might give it a shot, Can't hurt any more than spraying them with a pressure sprayer.

I wonder if you put a little Salt-X in the spot where the detergent goes, if that would help? I think it might.

Re: cleaning avets

Got this idea from Harry, owner-designer at Avet. Reels need to be vertical so water can drain down, not into sideplates and interior of reel. I run it thru 2 complete wash/dry cycles [no heated dry cycle], and no soap added. Mono was stripped from reels. My dishwasher has hot water on wash, steaming hot. I was "skeptical" initially, so after the reels were dry, I stripped spectra off the reels and checked, spools were perfectly clean, and so was spectra, no salt residue at all. Then took off sideplate, and checked inside, also perfectly clean and dry [overnight drying]. I've now got the worlds most expensive reel/spectra line cleaner, made by "Tappan". Oh ya, I wash reels on the bottom rack, it gets more concentrated spray, for "dried on food".

Rex,

After all this talk about the dishwasher I called Aram (Harry and Sarkis' cousin) and he said to do it.

I would never use soap on them, but what do you think about putting a little "Salt-X" ( I forgot to ask him) in the area where the detergent goes, to help with the dilution of any salt residue??

Also, do you put them through after every use??? Or just after every few times that you use them??

Re: cleaning avets

Don't know about Salt-X, probably not necessary, but Harry never mentioned using it. I'm going to wash my Avet's every time they go out on a Longrange trip, 5-day, or whatever, don't think it could hurt anything.

Re: cleaning avets

Sounds like a great way to melt all the grease inside the reel and have it move all over the place. I service my own reels and put grease where I want it. I'd like to keep it there. Also, what about the oil in the bearings? I might remove the spools from some reels and put them in the washer, but not the whole reel. No thanks.

Re: cleaning avets

Bearings, grease, and lubed parts are undisturbed if you put reels in vertically. Worst case, water would drain down inside of sideplates, without disturbing sealed bearings, gears, or any lubed parts.

Sorry, I'm not buying that line of reason. Ever grab a glass, cup or piece of silverware out of the dishwasher right after the cycle ends? It gets hot in there. I know that my dishwasher, (and I'd assume this is the case with most models) has a heater to get the waer temp up. No thanks, but you're welcome to go for it. If this is what you're going to do, I'd encourage you to open up the reels afterward and check the lubrication. Just my two cents.
