upgrade Avet 50 handles

i absolutely love the new TiagraA handles... nice and gripy

i hated my Avet aluminium handles and knew it was going to be a problem for me and my dad on our cow trip.. so i went to Home Depot and got a couple pairs of those rubberized gloves and cut the fingertips off..
-the leftside glove was for winding the spectra as tight as possible when flylining.. with a short topshot you're in and out of spectra every bait and keeping the spectra wound tight is important.. winding spectra tight with bare fingers = band aids
-the rightside glove was to grip the slippery aluminium handle.. in the hot and humid conditions, slippery dines and macks, next thing you know you're wasting energy trying to grip your handle instead of just pushing and pulling the handle..
those rubberized cheap gloves really gripped the sides of the reel, spool and handle...better than the bluerunner gloves we also had..

well.... some epoxy and scrap hypalon and you got a new improved Avet handle..
feels like a big ProGear handle, nice and full of grip..
i used the thick dense hypalon that Squidco sells.. i figure these dense hypalon didn't get chewed up by the rail and should be able to withstand the demands of being on the handles...

here you go.. new homemade upgraded handle..

super easy to do...
-take the handle apart
-rodbuilder's epoxy on the inside on the hypalon
-heat gun to warm up the hypalon so it stretches easier
-slip it on
-use one of those hole bits to drill out the hypalon
BUT.... the key is to let the epoxy cure before you drill out the hole.. keeps the hypalon from stretching after you cut the hole out.. the epoxy sets the hypalon in the stretched position..(the cut hole won't grow on you this way)
-put the handle back together..
done...

i'll give some feedback if i can get on this next 10 day trip on the Q..
hopefully i can get rid of these rightside gloves!

i know RickO is on his Avet LR trip so he cannot reply, but this is not to dis Avet.. i'm not affliated, just showing an idea i had and i'm hoping it will work out for me..

Looks bitchin Nelz. Great idea. You did a nice job on that. Maybe Avet will follow your example, and offer it as an option or something.

Re: upgrade Avet 50 handles

haha!! only a true SHORT TS guy would see that!!!

that spectra sat down another 1/4" into the spool after a few cowfish.. Kevan from Noah's had that reel spooled to the brim and it sat down that much!!! gotta top them off!

Re: upgrade Avet 50 handles

Nelz how much do you charge to do this modification? Can I take the handle off of an avet and send it to you for modification or do you have to have the whole reel?

haha!!! just come by next time you go to Noah's.. i'm wrapping those 3X and 4X rods right now so everything is out in the garage..
it seriously takes like no more than 5 mins to do..
only the end part of the handle needs to be slipped off....one screw

i'll get a couple more scrap hypalon from Squidco..
needs to be the short pieces that are 11/16" inside diameter and thin walled, not the thick foregrip ones.. this when stretched will make the handle too BIG..

let me know..

drill out the hypalon after the epoxy cures so the hole stays and doesn't stretch into an oval..

My God Nelz look at all the bling! You weren't kidding that you HAD to buy a ton of gear last year. You need to get a TRX next.
