Avet SX Drag Pre-Set

My Avet SX is a great reel, but I've got a small complaint. The drag pre-set has about 15 detent positions. (Drag lever in "free" and counting positions from first detent engagement.) I use the reel with 15# to 20# line and rarely fish with more than 3# to 4# of drag. The very first detent position corresponds to at least 4# of drag, which means that I often need to set the drag without the benefit of a detent. Not a huge deal, but on such a well designed reel it seems odd that the detent range does not correspond better to the actual drag range that would be used with the reel. My MX and EX do not have this issue as the detent range generously brackets the range of drag settings that might be used.

As I said, not a huge deal, but it doesn't seem quite right.

Three positions are bait, strike and full. If the drag does not increase from one to the other, your drag cam is in the wrong position. My SX had the same problem. Fixed with a new lever.

I probably wasn't clear in my message. I'm not referring to the function of the drag lever; it seems to function fine. I'm talking about the drag pre-set knob, which is used when the drag lever is in the "free" position. With the drag pre-set turned to the first detent position, I'm getting four or more pounds of drag when I move the drag lever to the "strike" position.

For salmon fishing, for example, you want a relatively loose drag (e.g., 3#)because the hooks can pull pretty easily. I can do this, but only by setting the preset knob outside of the detent range. It works, of course, but doesn't seem quite right.

Re: Avet SX Drag Pre-Set

It's quite possible that the minimum drag at strike is 4# on the SX... That being said, one could go in and change the position of some of the Bell washers so that the reel doesn't get as much drag at strike.

Something like:

Before - ()()()

After - (()(()

That way there is less pressure against the drag at a minimum setting. That was generally the problem with the first LX's that they didn't have the washers set up correctly so the drag was too little. A little experimenting might help and as long as you put it back together correctly, you wouldn't necessarily void the warranty when you sent it in for service.

PM me if you want me to look at the schematic and see how it might be done.

Re: Avet SX Drag Pre-Set

Definately something wrong. I have a brand new SX and it takes 30 detent clicks to get #3 drag at strike and #7 at full.

Thanks. Nice to know that I'm not completely crazy. Hopefully, Rick will give me a shout when he gets back.

I really am a fan of Avet. I just ordered a second EX 4/0 and a Pro 50 SDS.
