LX drag

I've got an old style LX and added the extra bellville washer to increase the drag. I set the drag for 12 lbs. at strike. Now when I move the lever ever so slightly forward from freespool it seems as though I have all twelve lbs. with just barely moving the lever. Is this common after adding the Bellville? Did I screw something up or do I just need to remove it? Sweet reel but hard to manage the drag the way it is.

You sure that you got the washers back on correctly? I've done a few of these and have never had the problem that you are describing.
