I couldn't get my JX to fit on this rod. My HX fits but would rather use the JX. Anyone have tips on how to fit the JX on?

You'd have to cut off the cork tape [4 inches] in the reel seat area, and mount the reel directly to the glass rod. Even then, the diameter might be too big. HXJ won't fit either.

notch the cork tape where screws go, leaving rest of cork. longer screws.

I had a similar problem with the alua. My Hx fit fine, then I bought an HXJ. No go, HXJ too narrow. The JX did fit, but I bought the HXJ specifically for that rod. The rod was built by Monte at M&M in Lakeside. Took him about 5min. to cut off the x-grip and thin it down. Now it fit well, just can't use the corkpuppy any more, use the clamp that came with the reel. If you are not comfortable cutting the cork yourself, I am sure he(or any competent rod builder for that matter) could do it for a small fee.

The ulua 93H has a pretty fast taper at the butt, so depends on far up the reel is mounted whether notching the cork tape will work or not. Also, If you do decide to notch the cork tape, its better to put something over the bare blank for something for the reel foot and clamp to bite into. On a smooth blank it will require much more clamping force to keep the reel from twisting around on the blank...and could create a weak spot where the reel is mounted. I recommend a piece of heat shrink tubing or X-Tube. Cut the shrink tube about an inch or two longer than the notch removed from the cork tape so it will cover and shrink down over the cut ends of the cork tape to keep it from un-raveling. The shrink tube will shrink down much thinner than the cork tape is, but will still give some cushion for the reel to bite into and grip.
As long as the width between the clamp mounting studs on the JX fit over the blank, I can send a set of HX studs for added length (I think the HX studs are a bit longer, but ill compare tomorrow when I get to work to confirm). Just remove the short JX studs and replace with the longer HX studs...the thread is the same. Give me a call at the factory tomorrow and we'll figure it out, ask for Scott. 818-576-9895

Srry Rusty...I was typing as you posted...I need to learn to type faster..lol. So It looks like a confirmation that the JX will fit if the CT is notched...easy fix, thanx Rusty. I wish there was a way to widen that HXJ for ya man...but that reel is pretty narrow...

I'm not so sure I want to noth the cord grip to make it fit.

Just to confirm:
My earlier post was incorrect as far as the stud length difference between the JX and HX. After looking at them this morning...the JX and HX stud width and length are identical. Length can be added by ordering a longer NUT, not the stud. The longer nuts have a longer shoulder and deeper threads.
As for notching the cord wrap handle, thats even easier than notching cork tape...just make sure to lash down the ends and shrink tube over.

| Ulua and JX
Try using seine twine instead of cork tape or shink tube on cork tape....But be sure to use a smaller diameter seine twine....works for me.
