Avet MXL

I just bought a MXL this morning and am wondering ehat the dial on the drag lever is for, is it for setting the tension on the spool for free spool or for setting the drag? if it is for the drag where would i set it at to have the most amount of drag, i'm guessing 12 but where should it be pointing at. I do have to say it's the best casting reel I've ever thrown! I burnt my thumb the first few times but after my buddy showed me how he thumbs the spool on his I got the hang of it. Didn't get anything on it yet, just went to the pier and had 3 shots at snook but I wans't holding the rod and was either off the pier of halfway down buggin bait so when the clicker went off my buddy couldn't figure out whoes it was and when he finaly picked it up I was wraped on the pillings.

That is your drag setting, make sure you only adjust it while the reel is in freespool. And you definately do NOT want that little knob turned all the way to 12!

Yes, the knob is your drag pre-set adjustment knob. There isnt a spool tension adjustment like a star drag reel has. The numbers inscribed on the knob are simply for reference only, in case for some reason you move the knob...to roughly find the spot again. The numbers on the knob are not timed with the threads or cam in any way when they are laser engraved and really arent designed as drag level indicators, other than to indicate that you are turning the knob in the right direction to increase drag or reduce it. The earlier Avets didnt have any numbers.

Hmmm..Im thinkin a bit less than 300 for 60 hollow, but not 100% sure. Hollow is little bigger than straight braided. You should be ok with the 30 or 40 topshot, but 40 will be pushing that reel close to its limits. I fished 40 on my MXL 2spd with 10-12lbs of drag for a quite a while with no problem, but could tell it was really pushing it.

thanks finadict...maybe I'll just go with the 50 spec...a guy on my 'lupe trip was using one with #40...I wuz uszin' my JX's for 40 but it looked neat...most of the fish we got were in the 50-60 lb range...I plan on trying it with a Seeker 80h or CS6485L...
