Remember to make sure the spool arbors are taped before winding the spectra back on! The grippy finger tape stuff seems to work best, but just about anything for the spectra to bite into and grip will work. We receive an average of 3 reels a week now, and numerous calls with complaints of the drag slipping, when in fact its the spectra slipping on the spool.
Also make sure to wind spectra on as tightly as possible in a criss-cross pattern. When spectra is wound on without the criss-cross, it burries into itself under heavy drag and gets stuck between the strands giving the illusion of a jerky drag. Spectra is great stuff, but can be your worst enemy while on a fish if not wound on correctly.
Dont just assume your local tackle shop will wind it on right, make sure to specifically ask them to back the spool with tape. Its starting to be pretty much a standard practice with most tackle shops to back the spools under the spectra for any make of reel, but surprisingly, many are not. I attempted to enlighten one of our dealers over the phone last week after receiving a reel from a customer with slipping spectra after he told me where he bought it and had it spooled up. The dealer replied "Hogwash!! Ive been using the same arbor knot for 40 years and they never slip." So I asked him to call me when the customer brings the reel back to be re-spooled...still waitin for the call.....
