Avet Reels Support Thread, 30N versus 4/02 in Spotlight; Is the 30N the newer version of the 4/02?
Or was the 40/2 the size between the HX and 30?

I know the 40/2 has been DQ'd tho.
Thanks!

The 30N is the newer version and basically is an improved version, more refined, more drag, and has I believe just a little bit more line capacity, but it is fairly close. Both are excellent reels. The 40/2 is an excellent 60lb reel. The 30N will do 80 quite nicely.

Thanks Nat, after reading thru the forum the 40/2 peaked my interest.
I was thinking the 40/2 would fill a "gap" between the HX and the 30N. It seems from sifting thru the forum the majority of the HX are used for a 50lb reel and the 30N for 80-100lbs.
That is until a Raptor HX is available |

My 4/02 it Alan-ized per his tutorial. It will give me 32# @ stike and 48# at full, more drag than either of my two 30N's. If by "drag lock feature", you are referring to the buttom to move it into full position, no it does not. Writing this post got me thinking. I've Alan-ized my 30N as well, except switching the plate to the shorter pegs. I wonder if that would give my 30N's more drag, not that they really need it. It's been atleast 6mo since opening one up, anybody know if the 30n even has different size pegs? Anyone try if it does????

If you are referring to the "lock" button that is a spool lock and not a drag lock, the 30 does not have it.
Sorry I don't know about the pins for the friction plate.

That is until a Raptor HX is available | That is exactly what I am doing with mine. Works there quite nicely. As stated with the Alan Tani mod the 4/02 will do 80 quite nicely also. I have left mine stock as I already have a couple of reels for 80. Of course the new Raptor's present some interesting new possibilities. Just when I thought I had all the reels I needed. |

Yes, 30N has pegs with upper and lower slots, move to lower slot for stronger drag. I did a 30N and 30W, got max 52-56# at full. Before you try it, get 6 spare clips, they're so tiny you may bend a few taking them off and on.

I think the 4/02 was a flagship reel made before Avet cared about whether or not you had the money to buy one of their reels for every line class out there.
I had one that would get 40+ of drag and it was set on the long posts... I think it's pure marketing BS that the EX was downgraded to 60# line class. Those that fish them hard, know exactly what I'm talking about.

I have both reels. I am sure they will both fish 80# especially if Alan Tani works his magic on the 4/02. The Pro 30 definitely feels like a more stout reel. If you are fishing 60 to 80, go for the 4/02. If you want 80+ go with the Pro 30.

Thanks fellas!
Just speaking wise, can anyone post a side by side pic of the 30N and 40/2?
Or is the 40/2 in between the HX and 30N in terms of dimensions?
Trying to get an idea for reference.
Nat, I am patiently waiting for ALL the Raptors to get out to the market but I don't think I can stand the wait |

Will, its a familiar feeling. When the HX was coming out it took a while for them to start releasing them. I had one on order for a couple of months with my local shop hoping to take it on my annual May trip on the Independence. I finally got it just before the trip in a plain brown cardboard box and was I a happy guy. Still am its a great reel. The new raptor's are really raising the bar again. Really looking forward to getting the chance to fish them.
