Was good Chattin with you today Chad!
Ok, problem solved. The problem was the spectra line slipping on the spool. I can see why it seemed like the drag was skipping. The drag would run smooth and then the whole spool of spectra would slip, feeling like the drag was fluctuating. With she Avet spool as smooth and true as it is..and especially the gunmetal color and full of line, its hard to tell if the spool is turning or not. When the reel was initially sent in, The service tech was looking for drag issues not line issues, lol.
Harry and Sarkis stripped the line from the reel to reveal the spectra tied directly to the spool arbor, with no grip tape for the spectra to grip to. They applied the tape to the spool and re-wound the line back on correctly and viola! problem solved!
Spectra line has no stretch like monofilament. When mono is wound onto a spool, it stretches and compreses and grips the spool and wont ever slip. Mono compresses so much that its been known to crush and implode spools! Spectra on the other hand, doesnt stretch and compress, and basically doesnt apply an inward compression on the spool to grip it tightly. When its wet and allowed to dry, then wet again..it swells and looses its hold on the arbor and can just spin on a smooth spool. Its a common practice for just about every tackle shop when winding spectra to back the spool with some form of grip tape for the spectra to bite into and hold to the spool...regardless of the brand of reel. The only exception would be a spool with a pin in the hub to anchor the line to. Avets (as well as most aluminum spools nowdays) have no pin. The dis-similar metals combined with soaked line is a big corrosion issue.
