Avet Jx 4.6.1 or 6.1

Im looking to pickup a new Jx and unsure if I should go 4.6.1 or 6.1 ratio. I usually fish sturgeon and want a reel I could use with 30 mono. I have actually been using the Avet sx for sturgeon loaded with 50pp with no problems and was able to land fish upto 7' in length. Impressed with that little Sx, it's a power house.. I also plan on doing some long range socal trips and would like the Jx to be used for that also. I want it to be able to crank down on a big sturgeon in heavy current and also for those fast running tunas on off shore trips. Any advice on gear ratio? I own a pair of SX, and a pair Mxj's looking to add to the arsenal..

77" Sturgeon landed on Avet sx and 50lb PP

Lower speed reels are better for gaining line on stronger fish. That said I really like my Avet JX 6/3 it's a two speed. My LX are also great reels for when I need more line. My 4.6 are great reels and my starter reels in the 40lb class.

I think the higher gear ratio would probably work out best when those fishing are coming at you. A two speed reel would be ideal, but if not I think the single speeds still have plenty of cranking power even with the high gear ratio.
I have an LX 2spd if you want to try it out.

If you can muster up the extra $$ get the 2 speed and you will have the best of both worlds...

If you are fishing sturgeon and use a lot of weight to keep your bait on the bottom in the current, you really need the 4.6 to 1 gears -- or the two speed but that's more money. 4.6 to 1 is fast enough for anything other than fishing jigs fast.

Nice, 2spd was definitely the best way to go. Best of both worlds. Good luck,

Get the lowest gear ratio you can for bait fishing. High gears are made to bring dead or tired baits, as well as lures back to you as fast as possible. When you have a sturgeon on, who doesn't "sprint towards the boat" and couldn't throw the hook if he wanted to.... you need low gears. If you have your mind set on Avet, get a two speed for the 3:1 gears. Even the 4.6:1 is too high for bait fishing. The 6:1 is just ridiculous.

I've been using the SX and MXJ single 5;8;1- 5;3;1; with no problems at all.. The 4;6;1 is to slow, at times the 5;8;1 is to slow when you get a sturgeon charging the boat and end up with slack line no matter how fast you can crank. They do like to jump also, i'd say 1 out of 4 sturgeon will go air born on you. I think the jx 2 speed will be perfect. Cranking power when I need it and high speed when I need it.

fuenstock, love the pic of the oversize caught with the SX. Did you have to chase that fish down?

This weekend is first of the Fall for Delta sturgeon and stripers for me and the first time I'll be using Avets in the Delta. I have 2 speeders in SX and MXJ, a single MXL and an older JX 4.1. Same deal, building for some offshore trips next year.

I didn't have to drop anchor for that sturgeon. Landed 3, 70"+ this year and didn't have to drop anchor for any of them with the SX and 50# braid. That thing is a tank for it's size. I use 8-9lbs of drag and adding thumb pressure when needed works good. I did burn and blister my thumb a couple times though.

I switched to Avets after I lost 2 sturgeon to another brand of reels. 1 got the drag smoked and the other got it's gears smashed by the fish. Havnt had any trouble with my avets, been fishing them around 1 1/2 years.
