mine works out of the box but if you like to mod it, look up alantani's posts.

the best thing you can do is to practice casting it.

The pros and cons on leaving it dry or to grease you drag come down to personal choice. I am not sure but it may void any kind of warrenty from Avet. It would be a good idea to become familiar with tearing the reel down and check to see if the bearings are packed properly with grease and it will help get you familiar with what basically needs maintenece. Follow Alan Tani's tutorials found here on BD or take lots of photos before you take a part off and after so you have some reference to put it back together. Pratice casting the reel as much as possible to become as proficiant as possible before the trip so you do not become "THAT GUY". Good luck and good fishing.

Put grease on the drag washer, NOT the bearings. Bearings need to be cleaned/sprayed out with carb cleaner and re-lubed with quality oil. i.e. ReelX, Black Market, or Extreme Lube and a drop of the other oils. Put a few drops of the Extreme Lube on the spool shaft. Set your drag for 8# at strike. Make sure you have fresh 25 or 30# line. Practice casting, and then practice some more. Good luck.
