Talking Birthday Bluefin

The lady and I have been fishing nearly every weekend for the past 2 years, working our way on up from the piers, to the kayak, and finally onto the party boats. With my birthday in early August, we knew that we had to take the next step: a 1.5 to 2 day tuna / birthday trip. All we needed to do was find a boat!

For the past month, we've been looking for that MONEY trip, one that appeared to have all the tangibles and intangibles. We hemmed & hawed over which boat to choose, until the lady happened upon THE trip -- a 1.5 day on the Excel leaving Sunday, August 2 for $340, food included! Now, I just needed to gear up....

I felt confident that my Avet MXJ 4.5 would hold up fine on a 1.5 dayer, but a part of me just wanted to kick some ass. So as a birthday present to myself, I picked up the one reel that I've been salivating over: the Avet HX. I had it spooled with fresh 40 lb P Line, so that I could toss jigs and bait without putting it down, and paired it up with my custom gold & black wrapped grafighter 700h. Doesn't the sound of that just make you wanna kill fish?

We boarded the Excel a bit after noon on Sunday, which if you haven't heard, is one hell of a boat. And it's not just long, it's WIDE! Food was included, so the crew (thanks, Johnny!) proceeded to feed us like we were on a Carnival cruise line.

Conditions were tough: washing machine conditions for most of the trip, and even the biggest boat in the fleet was getting tossed around like a smart car in a demolition derby. We only had one solid stop which came in the morning, a hit on the troll followed by some steady hook-ups . I started off with the HX, but after a few tosses for nada, I went back to ole faithful, the MXJ spooled with 30 lb. The lighter line didn't do the trick either, so I thought, f--- it, if I'm going down, I want that $400 piece of gold in my hands...

Instead of fishing from the stern, I grabbed that hot bait and ran for the bow. As soon as it hit the water, the bait took off, and then ... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! Bingo -- One, two, three, and I pushed the lever into strike, then full.

FISH ON!

I had my drag set fairly low, which turned the excitement on high. Three line rippin' runs, and I started to pull the sucker in. The line started to slack, so I kept cranking in high gear as I figured the fish was charging the boat. As the line tightened up, the fish took one last run, but the HX laid the smackdown.

The lady ended up with more fish, with a 30+ lb yellowfin, and two 20 lb bluefin, one on the troll. But who was I to complain? I celebrated my 30 birthday with a trip on the Excel, a new HX, and a 40 lb bluefin. And better yet, HER birthday is in September, so we have one more reason to hit the water again. The only problem now is that she wants an HX too....

My son and his Avet SX

This is my son with his Avet silver Sx and a tasty 16# silver Salmon caught off our dock on the Kenai River in Alaska on 8/3. He had 2 break off in the fast current before landing this one. It was really good as we had it with some fresh Halibut. Best Sushi you can have is what you catch! Wish I had a Photo of him fishing for Halibut & Lingcod in July with his blue SX, but we forgot the camera.... The looks he got with it were PRICELESS!!!!!!

Thanks and Tight Lines and Happy Fishing from Alaska!!!

avet reel success!

august 3rd, 2009-caught this 20 lb. mahi on my avet lx 6.0 fishing down off boca raton, fl. the fish ate a live pilchard and was a great fight on the reel spooled with 12 lb. test line. avet reels are beginning to gain popularity down here in south florida. me and my friends on the Advanced Roofing fishing team exclusively use avet reels for our tournament fishing. this year, we finished 3rd overall in the Sailfish Pro Series which included a win at the Sailfish Open out of Hawk's Cay resort in Duck Key, Fl. other notables include a first place finish in the outboard division of the Miami Mayor's Cup with a two day total of 26 sailfish releasesand a 2nd place in the Sailfish Cup with 20 releases. another day in April we released 28 sails in one day off Miami! all on avet reels!

Hoo-X Snapper

Caught this Red Snapper fishing 90 miles out of Freeport Texas on Aug 7, 2009. I was using an Avet HX 5/2 spooled with 65# Jerry Brown spectra on an OTI 400g jigging rod with an OTI 320g Jackal jig. We had a 12 fish limit of healthy snapper along with a 6 fish limit of Amberjack all on Avet reels and OTI jigs.

Got bit skipping the jig right off the rock within the first few cranks of a LOOOOONG cast. Fish never even had a chance to turn with the "no stretch" of the spectra and the easy crankin of the SX. Can't tell, but i was super stoked as we were just talking about how i hadn't put a big fish on this reel yet. Looking for a bigger one after these T-storms.

I got this nice Blue Marlin 08/15/09 about 4 miles off Los Frailes (East Cape, Mexico). The estimated 500 lb. Blue hit a Zuker 5.5 Guacamaya (Bleeding Dorado) and I took him on an Avet EX-30W with 130# hollow spectra and 80# mono topshot. After two blistering runs, she settled in for an up and down fight lasting approx. 25 minutes. For the last 15 minutes and 50 yds., I shifted to low gear and finished the fight. She surfaced belly up and expired. The meat was shared by all at Verdugo's and my kids all had marlin fish n' chips.

my brothers and I launched out of Dana Point harbor on 8/23 to do a little shark fishing aboard our boat "Sea Striker". Put the hammer down and made quick time out to the 14, plenty of chum and a lot of stink in the water for 3 hours, no love. headed back towards the harbor for one last try. shut her down about 5 miles due west of the harbor mouth and proceeded to start up our slick. after about an hour a couple of Blues showed up at the boat and quickly snatched on to one of our baits. my brother made quick work of him with a clean catch and release. I grabbed my brand new Avet SX loaded with fresh 25# P-line on my new G-Loomis Pelagic series rod and fly lined a 10" fresh dead mack out. I have only used this combo twice since i bought and figured a nice Blue would be a worthy opponent. after about a 5 minute soak, i get picked up on a pretty solid run. slide the lever forward and wham!! fish on. it took about 10 minutes before he came to color, thats when we realized it wasnt it Blue, rather a 70 pound Mako. we landed the shark and later on that night enjoyed fresh Mako steaks on the BBQ, nothing better. traditionally i would have used one of my larger 50 series reels knowing that Mako's were around, but after landing this shark on my SX, i certainly have a new respect for its capabilities!!!

Location – Approximately 80 to 90 miles SSW from Point Loma
Weather – Clam, around 70F
Boat – Success, 2 day trip
Captain - Cary Dodson
Rod – M&M custom Calstar 800M
Reel – Avet LX 6/3
Line - 80lb Spectra backer and 20 yards Seaguar fluorocarbon 40lb top shot

Story – We were basically on a fast troll home on the second morning when Cary spots a small paddy with a few good marks on it. He asks us to bring in the trollers. As we ease along side the deck hands start chumming with some of the last of our bait. Over the PA Cary tells us that he is marking some “better grade Blue Fin Tuna”.
Several of the guys have live baits in the water already as we slide to a stop. Within just a couple of minutes there are 3 or 4 rods bent, at this point nobody knew what they had. I finally get a good hot live bait in the water and it takes of down and out off the stern. Not very long and I get picked up.....I am thinking nice, give it a slow count to 4 reach over to engage the reel and load the rod when.........dooop! The fish drops the bait. So I am standing there trying to decide If I should reel in and rebait or if this bait is still moving enough to attract a bite when I get picked up again, this time its on!!
The fish runs almost straight down far enough to reveal spectra that hasn't seen light since it got put on the reel. My buddy standing next to me says “you know what kind of fish dos that don't you?” I replied “no what?” with a big smile he says “Bluefin!”
After the initial run the fish angles toward the surface and then turns straight at the boat. I am winding like mad and Cary asks “are you still on” I tell him I am and that the fish is coming to us he says “that's nice of him”. About then the line comes tight and the fish makes a run to the bow past 3 other guys fighting fish, after much running, ducking, weaving, sweating, huffing and puffing I get up to the bow fight the fish for a few more minutes then he makes a run to the stern and again past a couple of guys that are also on fish, more with the running, weaving and like before. Four times he takes me around the boat and at one point stops halfway and angles back toward the stern and sharply under the boat, luckily Shaun the cook was with me (when hes not cooking or cleaning he is a good deckhand) and says hand me the rod since it was apparent that we were not going to get around the stern in time to keep from getting cut off on the rudder or prop. When I gave him the rod he backed the drag off and gave us the time and angle we needed to get back around the stern, nice save.
Finally on the fourth circle around the boat we get our first look at him and everyone is thinking Bigeye just due to the size of it. After that we settled into the big circle type of fight that is just a battle of endurance typical of tunas.
I don't know how long the fight was somewhere from forty five minutes to an hour when AJ gets a good gaff shot and brings a very good 80.4lb Blue Fin Tuna to the deck. At one point we had six of these fish hanging and ended up putting four on the deck.
I was a great end to a great trip in which we had limit style fishing for 30 to 40lb Blue Fin Tuna and smaller Yellow Fin Tuna.
Great boat, captain and crew, thanks again.

Lemon Shark

Lemon Shark
Martin County Florida Beach
08/03/09
Blue Avet 80

This is one of the many sharks we caught on an Avet during this years Shorebound Shark Tourney. The tourney is a multi state tourney ranging from Texas to Virginia, and the tourney is 40 days from July 1st to August 10th. All sharks must be released and all sharks must be caught from land. You can 3 to 5 person teams and ours is Team Blackbart. We won the 08 and repeated as winners in 09.
This is a 9ft Lemon shark we caught on the east coast of Florida in the last 10 days of the tourney. We caught a 11 ft 3 inch Greater Hammer that ended up being the biggest fish of the tourney but forgot to get a picture with the reel in it.

We use a Blue Avet 80w with 200pd braid backing with a hundred yards of 200 pd mono on top.

Date: August 26, 2009

After having worse than expected weather waiting for us upon leaving the harbor we determined that running to the Fly was not an option. Our plan was initially to hit the 182 and then turn SW and split the 43 and the Fly, looking in an area that would have likely seen little boat traffic. It payed off in a couple of Dorado for us, including this nice 23lb Bull I landed on my SX loaded with 20lb Big Game on a Seeker Classic 865.
