Although there is nothing wrong with this approach, it is seriously under utilizing these reels in every line class IMHO.

I use an SX for 15-20, an MXL for 25-30, a JX or LX for 40-50 and I'm conservative with my line classes on these reels. Everyone of these could easily go up another line class and have plenty of drag.

IMHO, the Hoo-X is a 50+ class reel. Frankly I wouldn't buy one to fish less than 60# as the JX/LX can do 50# for less money.

go away from the avet forum with that please. stick to giving advice on the question asked. post all u want about diawas in another forum. not here. hes asking about the mxj, not a daiwa lever drag!

oh and by the way, mxj, filled to the brim with 50lb spectra, u can change topshots quickly from 20lb to 30lb. go get em.

MXJ 6/4 MC is all you need. Jerry Brown 60 hollow and short top shot of 20-40 lb mono. Got a 126 lb yellow fin at the Rocks with MXJ 6/4 MC.

I fished 20# on my SX for 35# and up Cedros yellows and had no problem. Put some spectra backing on that JX and then you can fish topshots of 20-50# if you so desire.

I killed a lot of Yellowtail last year with my MXL 2 speed on a Seeker Blacksteel 670. I had 30# line and when the bit got picky, I used 25# floro and even once went down to 20. This is one sweet, well balanced set up. Don't have to have a 2 speed, but it did keep a couple tails out of the kelp. I personally like the MX over the MJ as it just "fits". I have 300 yards of izor 50# spectra.

Well just ordered the newer style mxl 5.8:1 from Charkbait. Single speed, Gold with 50# JB Spectra(300yds.) with a topshot of 25# Izor Blue. This paired with a Seeker Black Steel 670 (25). Hopefully this will be my go to rod this summer locally. Thanks for all the advice. Even you Daiwa guy...haha

Kinda new here. But I agree with most. JX is a little much for 30. In Fiji a few months back I got a 75 lb YF on an MXJ. Although I would not choose to do that again, it had plenty of drag. I fished 50 Izor spectra with a three foot leader of 40 mono to a YoYo iron. The thing about an MXJ vs an MXL is it fills nicely with a 300 yd spool of 50 spectra whereas an MXL requires you to purchase 500 yds.

If you load about 50 yards of 50# mono before you load the 300 yards of 50# braid as a filler you will have a full mxl for much less money.

Accurate has a really nice conversion table to help you fill reels with mixed lines. Line Calculation

Besides , who needs 500 yards of line on this size reel anyway. The mono base will also preserve the spool from corrosion caused by salty braid that isn't rinsed.

These Avets are monsters.. don't baby them with light line.. Abuse them with Heavy Drag!

SX 15-25
MX 25-30
LX 40-50
JX 30-50
Hx 50+

As with CraigsList YMMV
