8 year old land quality Lingcod

While fishing out of Morro Bay on July 3rd my daughter S. Evans managed to hook and land this Ling cod of her life on a swimbait.

We had been fishing for a few hours when I located a hump that climbed abruptly from 70 ft to 30 ft of water. On our second drift over my new hotspot I hooked a blue rockfish and as I brought him up I noticed a follower. I directed a boat mate to throw in behind me and he was hooked up directly. A great little flurry of fishing followed as all four of us onboard hooked landed and lost several fish each. At this point my brother-in-law managed to get snagged on the shallow hump. I reeled up and took the rod in order to try and free up the wedged swimbait. As I focused on the snag my daughter set the hook and yelled "fish"-I thought she too was on the bottom because the rod went so bendo! Than LingZilla made his presence known with a sharp run out behind the boat with the Avet reel's drag being tested and I realized that she was indeed hooked into the fish of her young life. I dropped the lifeless snagged rod and shifted across the stern to lend support to my protégé. I watched my apprentice getting manhandled by the ling for two runs before I had to support the front grip of the rod as she engaged in a Hemingway style battle to the death. You can see in the Pics how it turned out!

Having quality tackle allowed my 45 lb 8 year old to successfully fight a fish that was close to half her weight. I think an SX MC would fit her small hands perfectly!!

In the pics her uncle is helping her hold the Gaff as she can't get the fish off of the dock!

LingZilla bit and gave his last fight in 30 feet of water and made the whole day a great and memorable one.

Tackle utilized:
Avet MXJ lefty
Okuma Cedros Speed Jig Rod
30 lb P-line braid
Big Hammer swimbait.

I had my boys on a charter 3 day of the Polaris Supreme, dads and sons trip. We had what could only be described as an epic day of albacore fishing. The picture shows my son Hunter hooked up on one of the 12 albies he landed, all from 15-25 pounds. He caught 9 of the 12 on the Avet JX 2 speed, using iron on the bow! (Footnote - the boat had over 300 albacore for the trip - in the background you can see my other son using a silver Avet JX single speed. He caught a 36 pound albie with that reel, but the jackpot was a 47 pound albie).

Details;
Hunter Lane - 14
Avet JX 2 speed blue with 65# Spectra and 30# P-line top shot
Calstar Custom BWC
Tady Blue and Chrome
Location - about 160 miles south

34# Yellowtail

Was able to ditch work on friday for a little fishing. We were about 10 miles off Del Mar, trolling around a few kelp paddies. I really wanted to play with the outriggers that I had installed a couple weeks ago, so I had my bigger trolling gear out and this guy decided to hammer the black and purple jet head on the outside of the spread. Everything worked well. Weighed in at 34 lbs.

Finally the big ones

We had been hunting big White Seabass for the last 2 years. We had fished San Clemente Island, hit "the hot spots" at the Coronado's, Worked the kelp off Point Loma and every other rumored spot. On July 4th a friend gave us the numbers to his spot. He showed us pictures of the fish he had caught and said don't take less than 40lb. We had tried all the other spots so we decided to give his spot a shot but still we were a little skeptical. We figured we could always circle around and pick up some Yellow Tail as always. I took my go to set up MX 2 speed with 20lb on a Seeker Inshore and back up LX 2 speed with 30lb on a Seeker Inshore. These two setups were the big producers last year in our Tuna hunt. The guys were always nice and let me catch one or two and then it was always can I use.... This year they all have Avets. Any way the spot ended up being approximately between the Bullring and the south Island. Did look like much when we got the spot but we looked for the signs and dropped not 3 minutes later the MX went off and a 20 min fight produced a 42lb White Seabass. We moved up swell and dropped again and about 45 mins later the LX went off and my brother grabbed it (He is the only one that doesn't own an Avet something about paying for a boat) and 15-20 mins later we had another 45lb White Seabass. We reset waited about 1/2 an hour and the MX went off again. This fish did something a little different. At one point I thought I had lost the fish but it was trying to get under the boat and was charging us (thank Avet for 2 speeds) so with some creative boat work, a 2 speed MX and 10mins we had another 30lb White Seabass. We tried another run but it was noon now and the fishing had shut down.

Fishing the west end of the island in windy conditions this seabass hit a green back mackrel in 70ft of water. This fish made some great runs,I thought we had hooked anouther seal at first. After a few minutes it was clear I had a nice fish on.The avet was smooth as silk. From 300lb tuna and 800lb Marlin to 40lb seabass and halibut the avets never let me down.
