Crusied the 295 area, hooked up multiple times on bait. Killed the Albies on 12lb mono. Enough said. Reel kicks ass after 3 years of hard use. Rinse and corrosion x after every use. Thanks Harry and Sarkis and Avet company for a great product. |

| Independence / West Coast Marketing 6 day
Capt. Mark made a gutsy move by traveling for 2 straight days of a 6 day to get us to "the rocks" in hopes of some Wahoo & larger Yellowfin. Most of us had only been on 5 day trips prior to this and have never had a shot at Wahoo but this year our trip was fortunately extended a day. Within a minute of the jigs being put in the water we had our first Wahoo stop. I slid a bomb back on my Avet MXL w/ 30 lb izorline on a Cabela's rod and was bit within seconds. My first Wahoo with 3 more to follow that morning.
Later that afternoon we set up on the anchor for some great yellowfin action up to 90 lbs. My largest, estimated at around 70 lbs almost made it into the boat before I was feeding the tax man of Alijos. It was straight up and down after a 45 minute fight on a Avet MXL 2 speed w/ 30 lb izor on a custom Calstar blank.
The next morning found scratchy fishing for Wahoo and a decent pick on the Yellowfin when a physco Triggerfish sucked up a flylined sardine being fished on an Avet SX w/ 20 lb Yozuri Hybrid on a Shimano rod. After a quick picture it was released.
Working up the line we stopped at Cedros for a quick shot at Yellowtail that were not in the mood to cooperate much but offshore on our last 1/2 day of fishing we got on some good spots of Bluefin / Albacore for quick hits. I was fortunate to land 3 Bluefin to 40 lbs and a decent Albie.
From all of us we want to thank Rick Ozaki from West Coast Marketing / Avet Reels and Bloody Decks for all of the goodies that were handed out and thanks to David Rocci & Allen Smith our charter master and his right hand.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jeremy & Justin who lost thier father on the last night of the trip.

Personal Best on a private boat, 25 lb P-line, 25 seagar flouro, 2/0 ringed hook, Avet JX. fished another paddy on the way back that had dorado, Jim got 1 more Yellowtail on dead squid with a dean inside. thanks to my buds for the great time. only had cellphone cameras on board, will try to post pics later. Bueno suerte

South of 371
Avet SX 2 speed on Calstar 700xl
50 lbs spectra backing with 20 floro leader
July 17, 2009
We left out of SI Friday the 17th of July dark and early. Got a good scope of dines from e brothers and headed out towards the 425 / 371 area looking for the long fin. We got sw of the islands and ran across a couple of paddys holding. I hooked into a nice one with my new SX 2 speed. Running 50lbs spectra backing and a 10ft leader of floro. He ran on me and broke me off in the kelp. My buddies pulled on 3 tails 25lbs + but nothing more for me. Our gps was on the fritz and we were running the rest of the way old school. We got to where we thought the 371 was a dn found a few other boats trolling the area. We threw bcak the trollers and started boxing an area we believe was the south end of the 371 when bbzzzz... two of trollers go off. Sean and Ed grabbed the trollers and started cranking. I grabbed my SX 2 speed on my Calstar 700xl and tossed in a nice dine. Almost immediately my reel starts screaming and I knew I was on a good one. After about 15 minutes of tug o war i brought this beauty to color. Ed grabbed the gaff and brought it on board. We bled our fish and BING oh ya the freakin Avet reel contest. My buddy snapped the picture for me and here we are. This beauty weighed in at 28lbs on our spring scale we got two others at 26 and 30lbs. It was rougher the hell out there and we got beat up pretty good on the way in but a nice trip regardless.

The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth (anglers don't lie, right?)
Pulled in to a cove at San Clemente Island aboard the Amigo out of Newport Landing. Captain Danny dropped the hook at about 1:30 AM. Got up with just a couple of other guys, soaking squid until my first hookup, around 3:00 AM. Bat ray. Then another bat ray. I thought about going back to bed for a while, but just couldn't do it. I hooked up again at about 4:00. 2nd Captain Bob followed me to the bow with a flashlight, deckhand Joey is hanging by with a gaff because we don't know how far from the boat the fish is. Bob gets a beam on him down deep... its the right kind. More pulling, and Bob gets a light on him again... and Joey goes "Oh my God! Its a freakin toad!" Joey sticks him in the first shot!
Here's a picture of him in daylight. Weighed 35 pounds on the scale, and was the biggest fish of a 2-day trip.
Pulled up another nice one a couple of hours later, same setup:
Then hooked a third and handed it off to my 81 years young dad. He pulled on it for quite a while, until the line broke.
Captain Bob holding my fish, and me with the set up I caught it on...

Went on a 2-day on the Outer Limits off-shore paddy hopping....
I was excited to hear we were going after Dodos and Yellows because Mahi-mahi is my favorite fish to eat and I had never caught one before. I was not getting bit on any of the stops and my baits kept swimming back to the boat. I was getting bummed out, but my mom (Top Shot) kept telling me my turn was coming up. Sure enough at the next stop I am fly-lining a big sardine and all of the sudden a big Dodo flies out of the water. Everyone was screaming and then I realized it was on the end of my line!!!! My heart was pounding and my mom was screaming. The deck hand gaffed it and my mom was ready with the camera...It was the only fish I caught, but I didn't care...I got to knock Dorado off my list of fish that I haven't caught and it was the biggest one on the boat!!
That was my first trip with my new MXL. Good way to break it in.

Brian Silva is all smiles catching the first fish of the day! He was using an Avet SX lefty model with 20lb izorline on an 800-L Calstar rod. It was so cool watching the yellow attack his bait as Curtis and I watched it unfold. We were fishing the San Salvador Knoll area 7/26 when we came across the paddy. We had a really fun day catching, Brian prefers lefty reels and can cast his beloved Avet with the best of you, not bad for a youngster!
