can an sx 6/4 handle a 50lb king or wahoo?

Was wondering how low I can go for a an avet reel to handle a 50lb king or hoo. If the SX 6/4 can't then which is the smallest with 30-50lb spectra?

Note: this is from an extremely agile bay boat not a head boat where line capacity is more of an issue.

I would think you would be looking at least at the MXL (smallest you would even think about going) and I wouldn't even recommend that for fishing hoo's. Ideal would be JX. jmo

i think it could. it just wont stopem like you could with a larger reel with more drag. it would be great fun though. smallest id say is a jx that id feel comfortable with. although in your situation, it may allow for the sx 2 spd or mxj 2 spd to work for ya. get one and try it out. i bet you get yourself one of these reels, then use it on a hoo, enter it in the avet contest, youd win!! make sure to post when you accomplish this. others and myself would love to see it.

Yeah, the biggest k,d, or w i've caught have all been in their mid 50's and all were on custom penn 16s'. Wanted something that was more of a challenge than on those big two speed 16s'.

Go for it on the Kings. Fishing out of Destin and P'cola we used to use JX's and MX's spooled with mono and caught plenty of smokers no wahoo though. Spool with braid and you should have plenty of capacity especially if you can chase down. With the light drag settings you use on kings I think a wahoo would spool you in short order on an SX.

go for it it will handle them just fine from a small boat... i have caught several 90-110 Yellow Fin Tuna with my mxl 2sp loaded with 30... no problem. the sx 2 sp is plenty of reel as long as you can finesse a fish. load it with as much 30-40 lb spectra and a short mono topshot of 30 momoi... have fun. ps when i had my sx single speed i had a client land a 205# halibut with it... its more about the fisherman than the equipment as long as the bearings and drags can handle the speed, and the avets are built for the long haul.

I catch striped marlin with mine, works fine. If you want to fight the fish go for it. If you want to increase your odds go a little bigger.

I figured the happy medium b/t all the replies was the mxj. So, that's what I ordered. Can't wait to try it out this weekend in hopes of getting a piece of the early summer wahoo bite in SE florida.
