Looking for a liteweight reel to tackle some West Coast albacore and yellowtail. I don't see much difference between the MXL and SX models. Do all the MXL's come with the Magiccast feature? If so, is it on all the time or is it selective? I've heard that the system works but is extremely limiting when it comes to getting adequate distance during bait casting. If I can turn it off and have a non-restricted free spool option for casting then it shouldn't be a problem.
Do I instead save a few $$ and just go with the SX. Is the MXL really that much better?
Id go MX for albies and yellows, All MX are not MC, you can get it regular for a lil cheaper, the mc you can adjust on a scale from 1 to 5, so there is always a little restriction on the free spool if I am not mistaken, I have 2 mcs they cast iron great but the mx I use for bait fishing is not mc..
sx for #20 and mx for #30 is what I do..

I Have the MXL which I use for casting irons and some bait buy the MXJ set up just as Terry wrote is the way to go. Ihave just about 300 yards 50lb spectra and that leaves just about a 100 foot topshot of 30lb test. The set up absolutly kills the tuna to 50lbs.
MXL, though the MXJ is the happy medium. I don't think I'd set up an SX on a stick that that was heavier than 15-20#, whereas the MX series feels balanced up to about 40#.

Exactly how I use mine I couldn't remember how much Spectra It holds till your post.
MXL is very versatile reel. You can catch anything from calico to pretty good size tunas. All you need to do is 300yards spectra with appropriate top shot for different fishes.
The MXJ is actually narrower than the SX but larger in diameter. It holds more line and is nicely proportioned. I have 300 yds of 50# spectra on mine with about 100' of 25# CXX mono. It's the way to go for what you've outlined.
