JX 6/3 Magicast Settings

Just bought a JX 6/3 MC to match my new jig stick. I've heard a little here and there about how the magicast settings help guys like me whose thumbs aren't as good as they should be. Any tips out there on using the settings. There's nothing in the manual about what to do when. Is it just trial and error?

Start at the highest and work your way down.

I read somewhere that settings 1-2 were for live bait, 3-4-5 were for irons with no thumbing--you still have to stop the spool on contact. Of course you can work your way down if you are thumbing it...

I'd start with #3 and go either way. Each reel probably be different and the variables will also be rod type, weight of jig, line test, and YOU. There is no answer to the ??? as you asked it--just experiment. Remember that you shouldn't really have to thumb the reel until the lure hits the H20. That's hard to not do. You'll love the reel once you get used to it. It's not 100% backlash proof, but very very good. Good luck. Lowell

what he said. take it to the park. find a couple irons that you dont use, 1 surface and 1 yoyo type, cut the hooks off, and fire away my friend. id say 2-3 for the surface iron, and 4-5 for yoyo type irons is a good starting point.

btw what kind of rod are you mounting it on?

Grafighter 800H. Thanks for the help. I'll see if I can hook up on a coyote in my backyard before leaving.

Just the opposite. #1 for heay iron and #5 for live bait. #5 provides the most braking and you need it when the line is not being drawn out by the light bait. I cast 1oz swim bait on #3 all day long.

huh? really? naw, i dont think so. i dont believe that at all.

so ur saying setting it at 5 gives it more braking power, and you want ur live bait to pull againt the most resistance possible? doesnt make sense, but to each his own i guess.

id still set it up the way it was described in a post above.

I'm 99% positive you are wrong on this one... try casting on 5 with a live bait and see that it goes no where. The settings are for the "cast"...

I would swear Harry told me the same thing, however I find the opposite true for some reason also... Don't really know.. I am taking half and half (mc/non-mc) so I should have a pretty good idea after an 8-day if I like them and how they work best......

Test it "dry" - and fish it. Period! Everyone has a personal style, the MC just enables you to enhance/improve your style.
"5" delivers the most effect while casting, "1" the least. Your personal truth is somewhere in between the settings and depends on your requirements.

If you need some help - invite me to guide you with all costs covered.

ps. since I am in Germany, I am willing to pay 20% of the airfare myself

pps. Seriously. Test the reel (they are amiable) and find your own truth. As always with fishing - there are no strict guidelines. He who catchtes the fish is always right!
