Question MXJ woes...

I have a new and never used MXJ I bought to put on a G-Loomis Bucarra rod for bottom fishing here in Alaska. I took it to work the other day to show some friends. I told them all not to adjust the drag tension knob if the lever drag was not backed all the way off. When I went to play with it yesterday I found the handle very hard to turn if any drag pressure was applied. Did a bearing or washer or what ever get crushed or damaged accidentally? It was working fine. I am about ready to send it to AVET. Any ideas?. Thanks.

Sounds like the right side plate bearing, or pinion bearing is damaged. 'Excessive' drag settings crush the bearing cage into the races and balls. The bearings are easy to replace.

Easy if you know how and have a bearing. Should I send it to AVET?

Knowing how isn't hard. Alan Tani has a post on this board with great photos showing the process. Avets are midrange on the scale of reel maintenance. You can PM me if you have an issue. I'll take mine apart with you just to 'talk' you through it if you get in a bind. Call Avet and order two pinion bearings and the spool bearings. Replace the pinion, keep one as a spare, and keep the spool bearings as spares for future maintenance. Living in Alaska and dealing with postage times is all the reason in the world to take up reel maintenance as a hobby.

My MXJ is ok. Nothing wrong with it. There is somethig wrong with the idiot owner though. I am to embarrased to say why the handle would not turn, so I will go fishing!

Ok, the loop was not on the reel foot. Do you think I'm stupid? One of my friends tied the 50 lb. braid off to the frame and I did not notice. So ya, I am stupid! Ya just had to make me fess up. My daughter and her husband have a fishing guide buisness, She cracked up when I told her about my post.
