MXL581 single speed Spectra?

Just picked up an MXL581 single speed reel. I'm throwing it on a Shimano 8' teramar rated 15-30. I'd like to use it as my go to 20-25lb class reel. I plan on throwing surface irons, fly lining, and possibly even some bottom fishing.

I'm new to the whole spectra thing, i usually go straight mono, but i'd like to expanp the horizons a little. What lb and color spectra should I wrap this with? i was thinking 100lb and then swapping out 20-30lb mono topshots.

Am I heading in the right direction here? I primarily fish the local kelp down here in San Diego, but I will be making many island trips this season for Yellowtail, and i do plan on hitting up some tuna trips as well.

Thanks for any input or advice.

I would probably go with 50 or 65 pound spectra. In my opinion that is too light of set up for surface iron but would make an awesome fly line set up. I like to use 40 for surface iron.

I concur...

Or, fill the whole thing with 65lb and put 3-4 foot fluorocarbon leaders on the end as you need them for different weights.

Stay away from the 100lb spectra

A good 50 lb spectra like Izors, power pro, Blackwater and I beleive diawa and P-line both have a spectra product. If you are going to use it for Irons, bait and rockfishing fill the reel and leave enough room for an 80-100- yard topshot for casting irons in case a backlash occurs so it does not reach into the spectra. For bait I like to use about 100ft topshot for fly lining and for rock fishing tie your double hook rig straight to the spectra or 5-6 feet to tie you jig on. These are basic rule that fit my needs and may not fit others but it is a place to start.

I don't like Power Pro. The green gets all over your hands and your reel. I don't like Tuf Line either because it has a wax like coating all over it.

Stick with Izorline or Jerry Brown!
