Question jx spool seems to have to much side play.

I hope someone can tell me if the new reel I got today from cabbage key is alright.
I got an LX 6/3 for my son and a JX 6/3 with mc for my wife.
The problem is...the JX has, what feels to me to be, quite a bit of end play. The LX has near zero.
I don't see a way to adjust it either. On my PG 2500 there's a screw on the side that adjusts it. In fact I've never had any reel that didn't have some form of screw somewhere to adjust this type of play out.

Thanks

The JX should also not have end play. Cabbage Key is a straight shooting outfit so I would contact them with your concerns. My bet is they will be more than anxious to make sure you are satisfied.

all avets have play in freespool, thats common. i believe the end play your refering to is when the reel is in gear andcan be eliminated by turning the drag control knob clockwise, this puts more tension on the bellville washers thus controling the backplay. you might also check the bellville washer settings inside the reel by taking the side cover off

Except turning that knob is adjusting the drag. The difference in the two reels might be how they are adjusted for different drag settings.

Both of those reels should be the same. They are rated 15# at strike, and 20# at full. Do not tighten the pre-set knob, (drag), while the reel is engaged. You can check the washers against the schematic to see if they are set correctly.

ie(() or (()) or ()()

I'm not positive how many there are...I believe four, and don't have a schematic in front of me. Also not sure how they come set from the factory but it is something to check, and relatively simple if you are comfortable opening up a reel. Let us know what you find out.

turning the drag knob directly effects the gap between the bellview washers. like he said ck the schematic at avet.com it will tell you the exact way they should be stacked on the shaft and how many. I would do that first.

I agree. I mean the JX moves like a 1/16 " from side to side, while the LX has maybe .005" of movement ( feels good).
I dropped Cabbage Key an e-mail today. Let you guys know what they say.

So Cabbage Key got back to me and this is what they had to say:

"Hi Keith
Thanks for the order
I just spoke to Harry at Avet. The side to side clearance on the JX shoulf
not exceed .004-.005 like your LX is.
He said to return it and they will take care of it, probably a small metal
burr on the shaft
Please send it back to Avet or if you are close by, you can bring it in and
they will fix it on the spot
Their address is

Avet reels
9687 Topange Canyon Rd
Chatsworth, Ca 91322
Ph 877 487 4476

If sending it
Enclose a note explaining the problem"

I hope this helps anyone out that may have received one with a similar problem.

Kind of surprised Cabbage Key did not handle it directly for you, but it probably will be faster direct through Avet. Avet is well known for fixing things that you personally bring in on the spot. It usually only takes a few minutes, and sometimes you can get a factory tour which is really nice.

Eddie's a great guy to deal with. I'm sure he's thinking that it would be faster sending it right to Avet, and he would be right.
