Yes avet does make leftys... My dad is a lefty and he has a number of avets... I would select a calstar grafighter 800XL and an avet mxj with 50# izor spectra and a topshot of 20# mono..... Contact Baja Fish Gear in Lomita, they can set you up with the gear you need...

I take it you don't get out much so I would suggest using the boats gear. Trust me when I say it will save you big $$$ in the long run.

MXL

50-65# spectra

25-40# topshots

5# yellows to 40# Blue Fin Tuna

During the summer some 3/4 boats will look outside for the tuna.

Never know when they might find a pod of dolphin with a massive school of suicidal Yellow Fin Tuna under them.

Short fluoro of 30-40# and youll get em.

I only fish 20# as a last resort, if the 30-40 won't work. A 20# yellow at Pukey Point on 20# is a rocked fish most of the time.

And if you'll be doing some 1 days for albie, 30# is where you want to start, then go up or down depending on the ferocity of the bite.

has anyone really been even close to getting spooled with a sx or mxj on a overnight trip. both reels hold alot of line when properly filled with spectra and a 50 yard top shot. I have caught some big fish on overnight trips and ive never seen the spectra on my mxj

sx for 20

mxj for 25 or 30

teramar wc tmcx80 mh

300$ OR LESS

Keep in mind that the window of opportunity is often short w/ yellows or tuna.

Sometimes you gotta gettem fast, 1 shot all day

20# can and does get them but I've caught 3 to 1 with 30-40# over my buddies fishing the 15-20# on the albies.

It is not about getting spooled, it's about getting them to gaff and getting another one when you're fishing on a sport boat or looking to get some meat in the freezer.

On a private boat you can fish 125# stripers on your SX w/ 20#, like I tried, for hours and not feel bad when they pull the hook

SX, MXJ or MXL will all work good for 20 & 30#

get a jig master and fil it with 30# and put it on a big 5 rod or a used calstar/seeker. dont be one of 'those' guys that get expensive gear and need the deckhand to help with a backlash or setting the drags.

For me I would vote for the MX (either a J or an L) and a used Calstar 800XL or maybe a Calstar 270-8ft.

I know this is an Avet board but a Newell 229 might be easier to learn to cast with.

If you do get hooked on fishing, I promise this won't be the last rod and reel you'll acquire.

If fishing doesn't turn out to be your thing, selling quality gear is not that difficult.
