| Magic Cast and Live Bait?
I went to check out some Avet's today with Magic Cast and tested the free spool. I think it would be great for newbies like myself for casting irons and not caring about losing 20% in distance or so..but I am concerned about live bait.
I want to protect myself from backlashes as much as possible because I am short with patience and those damn things really make me angry haha. And I can't cast worth a damn.
I'm not sure a small chovie or sardine can swim very far even on Setting 1. Setting it at 2 and I don't think the live bait can even move.
For live bait, its all about presentation right? Underhand lob that puppy like 20 feet and let them swim.
I was set on getting MC versions but was turned off when I played with them in my hand. So my question is, can a small live bait swim against the "restricted" free-spool caused by the magnets?
Anyone with a MC or magged reel care to comment?
To MC or not to MC, for a retarded thumb but wants to fish with live bait more than iron.
The MC and the non-MC versions are very similarly priced right now causing my indecisiveness.

James sent you an email earlier today. Since you are a novice I would definatly go with the MC although, I personally would just practice practice practice casting. I give lessons but they arent cheap...

Any way back to your question, I have always felt that a smart thumb is way better than anti backlash devices, my tackle shop guy also said that you could convert non MC reels to MC (dont know if that is true or not, maybe someone else could comment) so I would guess that you could take it off once you got good. For myself none of my new reels have MC.

Hey Steve,
Yea I was going to make the drive over to Lomita, but after seeing the MC reels and seeing the lack of free spool I decided to come to the forums and ask again before committing.
Anyone use magged reels for live bait fishing. I'd imagine them little fishies get tuckered out.

In the case that you do fish chovies, help the little guy out give him a few inches of line out at a time.

| MC Avet SX 2-Speed
Ask Mikeylikesit...
He just got one and I brought up the same point to him. He is going to check it out and let me know.
I'm all for the trained thumb theory myself but I've been fishing Avets since the first LX (butter lip shark) came out.

just learn how to cast...its like saying you want to learn how to play golf, but don't want to learn how to put. casting is the very first thing you should learn, aside from a palomar knot. the MC thing is neat and all, but a trained thumb is way better. i mean, what will happen if you want to fish calicos or the bay? you gonna use an sx mc if you ever try freshwater? or borrow somebody's reel?
everyone sucks at casting in the beginning, hell I've worked overnight for a few years and i still mess up every now and then...just part of the game buddy

Magnets don't really help with live bait. The magnets kick in when the spool is really spinning fast like with throwing an iron. At lower spool speeds they don't do much.
