Exactly... Without the shoulder you will likely get a backlash thumbing the line on occasion. I dont know... My local tackle store pretty much had the same opinion as most and had me totally talked out of the MC... I was bird nesting on occasion say 1 in 10-20 casts, which didn't seem to bad but I figured why not.. So I had the mc frame put on my mxj and wow.. It is damn near impossible to screw it up.. I have only used it on one trip so far but didn't notice any issues with a dine pulling on the MXJ... Anyhow I only have the mc on my sx and mxj as I don't seem to have a problem casting the lx/jx/hx for whatever reason... You will lose a little distance so there is a trade-off. Time will tell but so far I haven't found a reason to switch back and damn are these things easy to cast. I honestly had to try them myself and still can't give you an opinion because I am still on the fence...

I think you will be happy with the MC.

Yea the way I saw it, get the NON-MC versions for $20 less per reel, and spend $160 to upgrade to MC versions, or spend $20 now, and if I hate the MC, I'm positive I can trade someone trying to upgrade to MC for even money or might even make some money. Didn't really see it as a losing situation.

I have 2 Avet MC. I have an MXL and a SX 2sp. In my opinion, they suck when it comes to live bait no matter what setting its on. But for jigs/irons/lures, they are excellent. I originally bought the MXL, then upgraded it to an MC cuz i couldnt cast. The MC help me become a better caster so i have since removed the MC and put the original housing back on. like they say even the best fisherman still gets a nest. its just apart of the game.

Cast control does effect freespool!

My Penn 525 Mag works the exact same way and has no affect on how a bait swims as do the various baitcasters with magnets of which I have several. Mel (Jurel) has a post on Senor Tuna on magging a Trinidad. Same thing there.
Just got back from an 8 day, I bought the avet 2 speed with cast control and is sucked for flyline dine fishing with 30 or 40lb compared to the same or larger Avet 2 speeds with no cast control. I was very disappointed, bought it for my son to keep me from undoing his nests and we ended up using for surface iron or yoyo only. Avets free spool incredibly well, I was and am still pissed.

In playing around with it.......it does seem that the freespool is compromised a bit by the effect of the magnets. How much? well.........Im a friggin electrician......so I dont have that type of measuring equipment........but it does seem logical to me that on a long soak (like at the 'Lupe) your bait would not win the race against non-magged reels.
Are you comparing freespool on your new sx not loaded to a sx that is loaded with line, that will effect how long it spins before it stops too...

I plan on getting a avet with mc strictly for iron!
