Why would you put 65 or 80 lb on a reel that's going to give 20 lbs of drag at best ?

80 lb hollow because its easy to splice 30-50 lb mono or fluro topshot. as to filling reel with 350 yards of mono

Spectra?

1.Because,my topshot may be rated up to 50lb test and I would rather pop mono than spectra.
2.Because spectra is so thin that I can do it.
3.Because the bend of the rod and the drag from the water will increase the total drag.
4. To fill the spool and reduce the amount of mono on the reel

Yea that works. I prefer more yardage of the 40#, I only set my drags on those 20# reels to 12 or 15 at the most, whacking them up including the rod bend etc. I've burned up bearings thus use lower drag settings, and the line is so small I don't bother splicing but use knots. I hope this gives some different views for the question at hand.

I understand and appreciate your position, but for the price of an Avet the user should be able to push the reel to it to its full potential every now and then. Though 40lb test is probably ideal on the reel, with 20lbs of drag the angler should be able to fish 50lb test line without much worry. It's like buying a fast car and always keeping the speed limit. Sure it's safe but where's the fun in that.

because 40# spectra will break before 30# mono. 50# spectra will break before 40# mono. 65# spectra will break before 50# mono. plus the larger diameter spectra is more durable than the thin stuff. the thicker spectra is also easier for splicing. 65# solid or 60# hollow (300 yards) to 30-40# mono topshots for fly lining baits.

i use 40# spec for bass.

I use 80# hollow but 65# should cover anything you splice to it and you'll get a little more on the reel...
