Avet SX MC or Avet MXL MC

So I'm a beginner. I own a Shimano TLD20 with Power Pro spectra 30# and 30# mono. To me i feel it's not as smooth as my friends Torium 30 and heavy.

So I take charters down to the Coronado Islands near San Diego for Yellow Tail, Blue Fin Tuna, Bonita, Rock Fish, Ling Cod, Sculpin, Calico Bass, and halibut. Thats what i need this rod and reel for. So surface fish and bottom fish. I'll probably be casting with live bait (mackeral) and dropping weights for bottom fish.

I want something light and easy to use. I don't want to worry about line poundage cause i dont expect to catch anything more than 2-28lbs fish for the trips i go on.

I've asked the people at Charkbait but i wanted a second opinion before i purchase. Here's their response:

"The MXL is considerably smaller and lighter. The SX is REALLY Small. The MXL is more the size of a Newell 229 if that means anything to you. It holds 350 yds of 20# mono, about 260 of 30#. With the use of Spectra @300 yds 50# you can run another 100+ yds of 30# mono on top. You've got the capacity if you need it, and smaller size makes for more comfortable fishing. For what you're doing you really don't need to go too heavy. 20-30# is very much adequate.

consider the MXL instead. Perfect for 20-30# line. Use 300 yds of
50# Izor Spectra as backing, then top off with the mono you wish to use.
That's a great place to begin."

So the choice comes down to Avet SC MC or Avet MXL MC. Weight is a concern. And for my kind of fishing, what rod would be ideal for the reel?

Also i've read that people have been putting higher # lines on their reel that doesnt support such weight... how does that work?

I think sx would be enough, just spool it up with spectra first and you will be fine

MXJ is right in the middle, size wise. Great reel.

SX's smaller spool would be bad for bottom fishing. Avet's Lever Drag would be bad for surface Jigging. Why not consider the Neweell 299 as the rep at Charkbait suggested. As far as weight, the Newell's S series is about 4 ounce lighter than the MX.

I have been trying out various rods, and find that the Seeker Inshore 858 to be very light and very capable for 15 # to 25 #. I normally have 20# test on this rod. Great for throwing baits; works well for Rockfish bottom (300ft) jigging.

Really it all comes down to personal prefference once again. Do you want a smaller lighter reel with less line capacity or do you want a little bit bigger and heavier reel with more line capacity? If it was me and I was just going to fish one set-up I would opt for the MXL. You can fish more applications with it then you can the SX and you will have the line capacity. Also if you use Spectra backing you can use wind-on leaders and change out your topshots rather quickly. If it is purely a weight issue for you then get the SX. Now make the decision for yourself and what suits your needs!!!
