Anyone using a smaller diameter reel like the MXJ for surface iron? I am trying a JX now per recommendations but even with large hands it does not feel like I would enjoy slinging the iron all day. Want to pair it up with a GG690J and will use spectra back to compensate for the lack of line capacity? Not looking to pull 50lb Cedros yellows with it....just the local size stuff around SC waters.
ive got one strapped to a 530. fish 30lb for smaller surface irons. works really well. heavier surface irons dont feel right on it. i also have a jx strapped to a 540 and fish 40 lb on it. feels really balanced and can cast the heavier surface irons (7x ,45) a mile with it now my thumb has been "avet educated". if you want to get rid of the jx let me know. ill scoop it up from ya for sure.
Nested my Jigstick on a Hot Tuna bite once. Grabbed my 7 footer with the MXL 2 speed on it , tied on an Iron and SLAYED!!!!!! 8 straight fish in NO time. 25-30pound class Yellow Fin Tuna.
I have a mxj on a JIg stick from the yak. I throw 30#, 8.5 seeker blank, model unkown. I throw lite iron 7x_jr about 60-70yds from the yak. I wish I had gotten the mxl for this application because the the extra width would make the retrieve easier .
