Avet MXL

How many pounds of drag should I be able to get without affecting free spool? I can barely get 9 and anymore whatsoever really reduces freespool. For whatever reason, I expected more. At 10#, if I tilt the reel to the right (handle pointing to the ground), a 1 oz lead weight will not pull off any line. If I tilt it back to the left, line spools freely. THis is a brand new reel, never used since Santa brought it.

But mine's got 2 years of saltwater beating the crap out of it on my kayak.

Jon, try the reel tutorials forum. I know I have seen a couple of posts like this before. I think at least one of them was fixed by restacking the washers? Sounds like it may not have been assembled correctly. You can download the specs from Avets website if you don't have a copy. You may want to PM alantani as well. He can probably help you. Good luck...hope it is an easy fix. Worse case is you may have to send it to them but they will make it right. They are very good when it comes taking care of their customers.

Are you setting any tension at the Bait setting in order to help you avoid backlashes?

I can get 12 1/2 out of my mxj. Any more than that, I still have free spool, but the side load is too great and the handle is a bear to turn.

To adjust the drag, I put it in free spool and adjust the tension knob. And I know about the bait setting and that is not the problem. When turning the handle, it feels "tighter" than my other Avets. It casts OK but it maxes out a around 9#s
