Sydney Australia, The 3 Stooges.15/09/06

As promised, this is yet another report from my mates down here in Sydney. I must explain that allthough the dates are the same for the previous report, they were two differing boats. This particular boat is what you guys would call a Panga!

To alleviate any confusion, the term 3 Stooges was applied by me, about these particular guys. The Crazy Captain is Phil, Village Idiot is Lee, and the Leprachaun is an ex-pat Irisman called Mark. Now that we have established the identity of the Stooges...read on!

The three stoges report....15/09/06
Well what do you get when you go out with a lepricorn a village idot and a slightly deranged boat captin? The fish of a lifetime is the answer... Finally after what seemed like a season of seeing everybody getting fantastic scores on the fin me, Mark (luck of the Irish) D and for the first time but Im sure not the last Lee.

Once we had sorted out the boat and done a quick block to pick up the forgotten bait we were on our way to Browns. We checked in with the coast guard and motored out under fiull steam in what would have to be described as the fishing conditions found in heaven. About 5ks from Browns we deployed a spread and were quickly rewarded by a very solid striped tuna followed by its little brother soon after.

With a couple of ultra fresh slabs in the esky we then decided to pull up stumps and start our cube trail, It didnt take long........After waiting only half an hour we had more than half a dozen black torpedos swimming at the back of the transom.

We wound in the cubes and excitedly plopped then over the side, and lucky for me, right into the gob of a hungry monster yellowfin. Letting it take line against the ratchet after what seemed an eternity I eased the drag up to strike and felt the weight of the fish. The deal was then signed sealed and delivered (at least i though it was) as I struck hard to cement the hook. The fish screemed of in an awesome first run.

The first 40 minutes of the fight had all three of us in high spirits as we enjoyed the anticipation of landing this monster. It consistited of jokes, a little banjo playing on the ultra tight line, nudity, and jokes about wether I could see colour yet....Surley it will give in soon

The next hour the jokes died down and the sun grew stronger....What was this fish made of? Sick mind games entered my inner thoughts "Maybe a mako will come along and help me finsh this fish off" "Should i just push it to sunset and pop him"" Maybe I should hand this fish on to mark or lee".

The day grew longer and the fish took us further and further south. Another 40 mins passed and I knew the fish, line, gear or me was going to break soon something had to break this stale mate. I was starting to feel the guilt feeling of depriving the other boys of their shot at a fish too, but no matter what I tried I couldnt break this fish.

Finally by inches the fish came into view circling deep as I got it up by using muscle draining, slow turns of the handle followed by short pumps of the trusty broomstck "true blue rod".

Finally the fish came up and I knew it was a monster when the first words to come out of my fishing partners mouths was "Oh my F$##$@ God". Mark tailed the monster and with assitance from myself and Lee hauled the fish over the gunwall. We all went into hysterics Whoo hooing and shouting that loud that we could of been heard from Sydney. This fish was an absolute beast Id never nailed any fin greater than a jelly bean prior to this fish so I was absolutly stoked to break my cherry with a fish of this quality. Just as when I had landed the sail fish last summer at Noosa, the satisfaction of doing it from my boat with eqally "Virgionic Jumbo fin" crew as myself just added to the rush of it all.

We gathered ourselves and tried a quick run back to browns to get another shot at some more before realising we had been dragged some 15 - 20 ks south of the mountain. Our thoughts then turned to making it back to port safely so we set a spread and slowly made our way back to the shelf and land.

Now finally I cant leave this report without giving a special mention to the boys on board, Lee for selflessly taking on the cubing role first up, Mark for doing an awesome job of tailing the fish and both fellas for their support for me, even though they knew their chance at a fin was disappering with every hour. I promise boys your both in the box seat for next time, thanks so much.

The fish wasnt weighed but was conserviativly a meter 50 long. I and the fellas are calling it for at least 45kg but I reckon it could have easily cracked the fifty mark. Another mate nailed a couple with the biggest going 55kg so this fish could easily be that big. In short it doesnt matter to me the memory of this fish and the privalge of taking and fighting the fish are what matter to me. With out doubt the hardest fighting fish I have ever encountered....Absolutley stoked.

Im sure Lee will post the photos as he was kindly waiting for me to do the honors of writing up the report

PS sorry for a long report
