G'day guys. I have a couple of more reports for you of Yellow Fin Tuna down our side of the world! For those that don't know, I run a fishing forum based in Sydney Australia.
This particular report was from a friend of mine, who was out at Brown's Mountain in a 5.5 metre bowrider. They got their quota of Yellow Fin Tuna, which is 2 fish of over 90cm, per angler, per day. Quote: BLOOD RED FRIDAY 15/09/06
Well it all started with a phone call from Red (Angelo) late thursday afternoon. The phone call went something like "It's pretty much flat ass calm out there tommorrow, wanna go out and hit the fin ?" After a reshuffle of some customer pick up's at work a call back to Red confirmed me as a starter. After some umming and ahhhhing the decision was made to chance fishing browns over heading south to kiama.
An early start from botany had us punching out to browns in some pretty stiff chop. Once over the shelf
we set a spread of lures, Two Pakula's and two divers as we decided to troll the morning tide change. Over a fishy temp break the long corner with the halco loads up and virgin bluewater fisho' Peter is fighting his first striped tuna. The 5kg stripy was dispatched for bait duties once on board.
Resetting the spread we continued our way towards browns. We didn’t get very far when the two skirts start screaming, and then the bibless...We'd be bombed by fin. The one that ate the bibless shook free and Red and myself began getting these fish to the boat. Red managed to get colour on his fish first and after abit of unorganised kaos it managed to lunge towards the engine, foul up and open up the light guage hook. Yellowfin 1 Us 0. My fish played pretty fair and within 10 or so minutes we had gaffed and boated a 30kg fin. Yellowfin 1 Us 1. We reset the spread and began searching for a place to commence cubing.
We began cubing a little north of browns, and commenced the fast 3 knot drift southwards. After hours of cubing and the usual "cubing concentration lapse" we managed to get a tangle between the two outfits. Well we all know when two outfit's get tangled the last thing you want to add to the equation is another 30 odd kilo fin, well we get a bite! Angelo and Peter Frantically tried to untangle the two lines while I sit there handling the fin. The boys managed to pick out the tangle and for a moment disaster was averted, but moments later the damaged line that was tangled parted due to a nick in the line. Yellowfin 2 us 1.
Half an hour later I noticed Red's 15kg stick with an unusual bend in it "Hey Ang, is that rod loading up?" Red grabs the outfit and begins the battle to settle the score, and within 15 minutes another keg hits the deck. Score board locked at 2-2.
After gaffing duties Red decided I should have a fish, so I began attempting to cube my first fin in over 6 years. Well all of 7-8 minutes pass when I get a run and set the hooks on another nice fin. Fully set up in the harness and gimbal the fish was knocked over in under 10 minutes, and we had finally hit the lead on the scoreboard.
With afternoon tide change approaching, we figured it was time to get organised and get some lures in the water. I wasn’t overly keen but after inspecting the stomach contents of our previous fin I was confident we had made the right decision to troll.
40 minutes into the troll we were bombed again! 3 rods bucked over and the organised kaos began. I managed to get mine to the boat first and Angelo got it into the boat quick smart with a excellent gaff shot. With peter still hooked up and losing line Ang got stuck into his fish and with abit of persuasion the keg surfaced and I gaffed and boated Ang's fish.
Going 2 from 2 we needed this trifecta for Peter as he had yet to land one. With patience and a bit of on water tutoring Peter was pumping and winding like a seasoned angler, and after a 40 odd minute battle on 15 a fish of 35kg or so hits the deck. Peter was stoked with his fish, and we were happy to have shared his first Blue water experience.
The score was settled with style and we took a 6-2 lead and filled our quota of fish. We went 6-5-4 on the troll and 3-3-2 on the cube and were reasonably happy with the results. The fish varied from 25-35kg, and were all full of Sea Gars. All fish were nailed on 15kg, and fight times ranged from 7-15 minutes except the last one.
Firstly I’d like to thank the weather gods, for flattening the ocean out into a big sheet of mirror, the weather was so calm it was beyond a joke.
Angelo, your wealth of blue water knowledge is amazing, thank you for the invite to fish on the mighty “Randy Savage” it was a real pleasure to get on the deep blue with you. It was a day full of laughs where finding the fish was just a bonus.
It was a pleasure to fish with Peter too, for a complete novice, he followed instructions to a Tee, and was determined to land that last fish. Well done mate, it was a worthy prize from a great tug of war with a keg of a fin
Sorry for the long winded report, but I figured I’d take the time to recap the days events. There’s a stack of pictures but I’ll just post up the goodies, as well and the bloodies for Mr Cool.
Chris
| I hope you guys enjoy the report as much I do! I should be able to have another report for you soon.

We already have a few American members over there. Actually have one that has come over and is spending time there right now. Still trying to get him out for a fish. I'd love to see his face if he gets over to my fave Yellowtail reef, and try and pull a fish out of there!
