This was our (Boulder and Myself) second attempt at the 3 kings for the year. Our first attempt had a horrible ending when the boat ended up on the rocks on the first night which you can read about here: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/author/story.cfm?a_id=41&objectid=10504982
This time we boarded a different vessel "Tracker 2" but still Skippered by Rick Pollock(the Guru) and Zane the deckie(guru's aprentice/part time lady killer)
Armed with some of the best gear money can buy for Kingfish and Massive Bass we departed the wharf at Mongonui and headed into the night for a 12 hour steam up to the King Bank
Up at first light we had a great feed and got stuck stright into the Kingfish with a 27kg fish coming up first on a brand new 250g custom Kojak jig rod
Next up on the cherry popping of expensive Jig rods was Boulder with a new Smith Offshore rod and a stella.
35kg of Brute Kingfish
Andy was right in the action on the Jigs as well with a massive Bass
One is Andy's Bass the other and effort from boulder on his new Trex which went 48kg!!!!!!!
With sore arms we headed back to the Anchorage for the night...... but the fishing for me hadnt finished for the day as each night I got into a bit of light tackle fun:
Day two
Todays target was to be Bass and with everyone geared up with top of the line Avets and Tiagra LRS' capable of putting out up to 70lb of drag we sent down some monster live and dead baits up to the size of 4lb trevally.
Daz hooked up on a real horse which beat him around for a while but he eventually subdued the fish and got it to the boat.......
At 58kg this would be the biggest bass of the trip
Which he followed up with another massive King
I havent caught many Bass before(1) so with a bit of expert tuition from Boulder it didnt take long before I got a PB of 37kg
in between getting bass I maaged this 30kg King
in the meantime our deckie was having fun cleaning fish
Day3
today was spent trying to find Kingfish around the Princess group islands but they proved hard to find and even harder to get to bite. So for lunch we decided to anchor up and try for a snapper or two..... The snapper werent in residence but the Kingfish were with 5 very respectable kings coming boatside including a very good capute of a 25kg king on a 150g Jigging master jig rod/noodle stick.
With the weather deteriorating we opted to make our way back down the coast for a snapper fish but the weather got worse and worse on sunday so we were unable to access any of the really good snapper spots. With sore arms and a full fish hold we headed for home.
What a trip!!!!!!!
I am sure a few more pics will come along in the next few days
