Puerto Rico Tarpon

Had the opportunity to fish for tarpon down in Puerto Rico for a few days last week. It was awesome!! The sheer amount of tarpon in the lagoon system we fished was unbelievable. From juveniles to full grown, they're stacked in there. We fished with MagicTarpon.com charters and the experience was unforgettable. Here's a condensed version of the report:
Dont' Mix the two:

Bridge going to San Juan:

The path to the tarpon:

On the first morning, we're greeted with tarpon busting bait like jacks would:

as well as happy "tailers":

Allan's first tarpon ever:

His dad's first tarpon ever:

buenos dias little puerto rican snook!

x2

I finally hooked into a sizeable tarpon (30lb range) and fought him for 40 minutes. They use LIGHT tackle for these guys...8lb mono!
Airborne once:

Airborne twice:

got several leader grabs at the boat, but he wasnt having it and ultimately broke the line:

Intermission b/w charters, mannino with a micro jack

Next morning casting for bait:

the bounty:

After going 0 for 4, including losing an 80-90lb tarpon that morning, i finally landed the fifth one:

It was an outstanding trip. The captains were the most respectul, fun, and knowledgeable of any I've met, and the fishing is unbeatable. Everyone on the trip (6 of us) landed tarpon and hooked up to countless that either broke the line or spit the hooks. The best part is that these residential tarpon get very little pressure. Where we fished is limited to the size of boat that can squeeze under a very tiny bridge. Also, we learned that no one fishes for anything there unless they can eat it. So both days, there were never more than 5 boats fishing within eyesight...and that's including us! I would go back in a hearbeat to fish there! Hope you enjoy the pics...thanks to Allan Chow for his awesome camera!

Thanks, your report sure takes me back!
Too much fun, even the wife enjoyed the mangroves.
Were guys crabbing (blues) under that little bridge?
See any iguana's launch from the trees into the water?

And the casinos...

haha yeah, there guys catching mahoras (sand perch) under the little bridge and selling them for bait. no crabbers, but a member of our party somehow managed to snag a big blue crab on a plug! lol we never saw any iguanas leaping off the trees, but heard tons of them FALLING out of the trees and into the water! i guess they can climb up but cant make it down very well

casinos were neat, but the women were beautiful

Very nice report and pics ! Thank you.
If I may ask a few questions... Do you eat Tarpon or are they C & R ? and the same ? for Snook ? I've never expirenced either one, but have heard they're sporty but never heard of the table quality

Tarpon are catch and release only. But I think you can buy a permit which will allow you to keep one. (someone correct me if i'm wrong). I'm sure somewhere there's a weirdo that'll keep and eat 'em though! Snook on the other hand are DELICIOUS. They also require a stamp in order to keep. The only trick is catching one w/in the limit which currently is 28-34". Both put up an excellent fight.
