My wife and I would love to go back one day, but we are very cautious because of the weather we dealt with. It was late September/early october and it rained 8 of 12 days and the wind after the 2nd day did not drop below 30kts out of the SE. I was amazed to see the weather fax's say the same exact thing day after day....It was like the movie GroundHog Day.
We stayed at Nagigia and loved averything except the weather and wind....
We would love to come back, but again would need a much better idea of when the winds would be lighter and more sun.
I think it was in 2002, which I believe they were blaming the weather on El Nino?
Thanks

I have worked Winters in Maui, Hawaii for 15 years, working for South Pacific Kayaks as a seas kayak guide. The original owner, Mike McCoy started a multi-day kayak/camping adventure 15+ years ago on Kadavu (pronounced Kandavu) and I participated in three journeys to guide on that beautiful island. Kadavu Dive Resort was who sponsored us and we would stay at the resort in between 5, 7 and 10 day trips. Our second to last day found us paddling by Nagigia Island when it was still be built. After we got the people nestled into their camp I would jump into the support both with the Fijian Crew and we would go fishing with what gear I had brought from Oregon, mostly salmon fishing gear. We had some epic days in the deep blue water just off Nagiggia Island for Marlin, Ono and Ahi. There were know charter boats on the island in those days but often thought that that type of boat would give you tremendous access to the fishery. As far as the questions about the weather. My three stays in Kadavu lasted 1 month each time over a three year span. The earliest I went was late November and the latest was January. Very hot and humid, try 93-95 degrees with 95% humidity. The humidity lasted all night. That time of the year is considered Summer in the Southern Hemisphere and it can be hot, humid and wet at times. But in between is was very nice except for he heat.
May through July are suppose to be the most enjoyable. The people are always enjoyable. When I worked down there the Kadavu Dive Resort was the only show in town. Great diving. lost touch with them but I assume they are still offering great diving.
Just called Mike McCoy and he said that he isn't involved in it anymore. Melissa McCoy can give you all the information you need, however she is not connected with the surf camp at Nagigia Island. Thanks for the post and bringing back the memories.

| Hi, Sounds like you were unlucky enough to just catch a tradewind from hell. The tradewinds blow during the winter (June - November) with the most likely windy months being August and September but you can get the odd one outside those times. They vary in strength from a mild 10 knots to a real bad one that can blow 30kts for a day or two in the middle. The usual cycle is 5 days of SE wind followed by 2 days of calm or light Northerlies (excellent wahoo fishing weather) You were quite unlucky to have such a bad trade in October. December - March is the very hot / humid time when the weather is mostly calm. Great for fishing but hot and sweaty at night ! (which is great when you are with a woman, but not in the jungle) - Apologies - appropriate "Good Morning Vietnam" movie quote.... My favourite time of year is April as its still mostly calm but cools a bit at night, same with November The bad news is the big wahoo and sailfish season is May - September when the big packs form all along the barrier reef. If its any help, my game boat fishes both sides of Kadavu Island so on a winter windy day - We just fish the lee side. The guide books say Fiji has a wet and a dry season. Yes it does but 55% of the rainfall falls in the wet season (summer) and 45% in the dry season (winter). What's important is that that 55% normally chucks it down monsoon style and then the sun comes out but in the winter 'dry season' that 45% rainfall can just drizzle for days. For more detailed info on the weather and fish season, have a look at the fishing seasons / weather section of the Matava Resort website at Matava - Home If you have any further questions, drop me an email through the site. Be happy to natter about fishing any time.
