| More Winter Steelhead from the Umpqua River.
Got up at 5 A.M. this morning and made the 1 hour 15 minute drive to Stanton Park in the Canyonville, Oregon area of the Umpqua River with two of my guides Andy Buckingham and Gil Phelps. Figured we would get in a little rowing and side drifting for Winter Steelhead before our first 3 day/2 night trip that begins this Sunday on 02/11/07. Fishing had been slow due to no rain, low water conditions and very, very clear water. Rain the last two days had the river color showing an excellent milky green color. Decided to fish the South Fork of the Umpqua starting our trip just behing the 7Feathers Casino and Resort. We were somewhat surprised when no one was there at 7:15 A.M. Did that mean that the fishing was better somewhere else or that we were the only ones thinking this area might be good? Well, nothing ventured nothing gained. We launched the driftboat and I motored about a half mile up the river for our first drift through the run. Side drifted our glo bugs soaked in salmon juice about 300 yards and ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ fish on. The water may have been a little cold but that didn't stop this 14 pound wild buck from taking flight in the air and making its characteristic jumps, surges and runs up, down and across the river. Fifteen minutes later we had the fish in the net and it was a beauty. Next drift through brought us another fish on and subsequent drifts brought more hits and more fish. Final tally for just 4 hours of fishing was six fish hooked and six fish landed with numerous bites. Only one other boat showed, everyone else was fishing a different area of the river. We ended up taking out right where we had launched from grabbed a beer and a burger from a local pub and drove home arriving there early enough to start prepping for our Lower Rogue River Canyon trip on Sunday. Here are the pic's of todays trip. Will post the news from our three day trip next week. We really think its going to be awesome down there.
1/4 mile from my hacienda I see this herd of elk in a field. Sweeeeet!
