Re: Belize

http://www.ambergriscaye.com/pages/town/fishing.html

looks like the lodges tend to have there own fishing packages. you may want to check with lodge/hotel your staying. you may get a better deal.

Steve Thompson sold the Tracer last year and moved down there to spend the rest of his life in paradise.

Re: Belize

I spent 10 days +/- there in 1990. I say "+/-" because we were staying on Ambergris Caye, flying through Belize City. At the time, we were advised by everyone that American's were targets in Belize City, so "get the hell out of dodge!" That being said, they held up our connecting flight, over and over, until after dark when the commuter could no longer fly because Ambergris had no runway lights. We insisted they hook us up anyway and get there, and after two hours getting a van from the airport to the marina, hooking up with a couple of locals, and running up some mosquito infested slough to get some (OK, alotof) beers, we ran for the islands in a 33 scarab! Not 2 miles out in the dark w/out lights we hit a sand bar hard. Props were sheered and we were aground. We were about to strip and jump overboard to float it when the captain screamed, "No!? Sharks!!" We waited for teh tide to float us, and crippled, we limped into Caye Caulker, where we docked and the captain secured 2 new props (I didn't want to know how!) At 7 am the next morning, we finally made Ambergris, just ahead of that the ferry shuttleing that morning's first flight!

I fished the flats with Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter for 2 days after the resort owner saw us catching fish off his beach for severalk days on fly and asked us to "guide". The flats hold lots of bones, baracudas, triggers and others. I also hooked up with another vacationer who had a panga to fish the reef and the blue water for 2/3 day trips. We got lots of great fish, a few tunas, a marlin, a few wahoo, and a giant shark that I caught on 30 class. We had a ball. Highlight of the trip was watching a HUGE marlin chasing 35 lb class yellowfin less than 50 yds from the reef break, 35 yds from the boat. Jigs and 30 class were nowhere near enough if going blue!!!

Re: Belize

Ditto on Scott's synopsis...i spent 45 days there in the mid-90's...man we got into some great fishing and gnarly situations...pretty wacky country...we rented a house right on Caye Caulker which is below the island Scott is describing above...

Be careful...for sure be careful down there...but Belize does have some fine fishing...back then anyway...good luck and bring back a report!

Re: Belize

fished w/a local named Kevin Modena in Placencia in June 2000. caught kings, jacks, bonito and black grouper to 40# at a place called the "angle" (deep dropoff @ outer reef edge). cruised next to a whale shark. saw huge tarpon cruising outer cays. had a big snook inhale and then spit out my MirrorLure 6' from my face in mangrove lagoon.

nice, laid back beachfront town, not too many tourists or dark alleys...

I've thought about retiring there for some time now. They have a sweet retirement offer. All you have to do to qualify is be 45 or older, prove 2K a month in retirement salary, and never get a job there. They will wave all import fees when you bring your stuff over, and you never have to pay taxes. Also no real need to learn Spanish as the official language there is English. Beach front property for 150K! even less inshore a little which is probably where I will be since it is safer during a hurricane.
