New Zealand???

Does anyone know anything about offshore fishing in New Zealand? I'm planning a possible vacation early next year. I hear they catch big grouper and tuna in their summer months (which are our winter months).

Any intel?

Re: New Zealand???

I was in NZ last year and they were catching tons of fish offshore. They call yellowtail "kingfish", and they are huge. We spent some time on the east cape and they were chasing marlin and tuna. Lots of big tuna around (over 200lbs). It was the best marlin season in several years, so I heard.

Good luck, you'll love the place!

Re: New Zealand???

It's been awhile since I've been there(1990).Fished with Rick Polick(sp) for 5 days out of Whakatane New Zealand.Rick is an ex San Diego skipper who caters to our style of fishing.Made flying fish and mackeral for bait for the yellows. Nice fish but it is rare that you will hook anything close to a 100lb'er.Lot of 40lb plus fish though.
Lot of the local skippers go for the glamour fish,Marlin. Most didn't have bait tanks but things might of changed since then.

Re: New Zealand???

Frank Luxenheimer, one of the newell reps on my trip, brought along a bunch of publications on New Zealand sportfishing, since he goes every year. They started catching Bluefin down there close to 1000 lbs.
He set me up with his buddy and im gonna be down there for a week this summer.
