| Trout fishing trip help needed...
Hey Guys & Gals,
I am taking my kids (6 & 9) camping the first week of August and need some advice. We will be in a 4x4 truck/camper with a aluminum boat. I am into getting off the beaten path and getting somewhere up high. Somewhere pretty of course with lots of tree's and a lake w/trout...anything come to mind you care to share with us? Sure would appreciate it and we will travel CA, NV, OR, UT, etc to find a great spot.
Thanks!!!
Zimm

| Lake Edison
Lake Edison is in the high sierras. It's above lake Hunington. It's been awhile since I've been there but it sounds like just what you're looking for. There's only one road in (it might still be dirt) and most of the lake is only accessible by boat. They have camp sites set up around the lake. The trout fishing can get really good. There's a stream running in from the sierras that was always full of trout. It's been some time since I've been there so things might have changed some. It would be worth checking out.

Not really off the beaten path but a great day in semi-civilization for non-stop all day catching fish. (Important for the little ones to have lots of action!!)
Shaver lake in Sequoia is where my boys, 8 & 11, catch more trout than anywhere I take them. Shaver is their first choice whenever I say that we are heading into the Sequoias. There are also some salmon in there. We always do good there trolling castmasters and rapalas, stopping and soaking powerbait, mini jigging, spinners, everything seems to work on that lake. I'm not kidding on the non-stop thing either!! All day long they keep biting.
There are alot of remote areas to camp etc. around there too.
Now if you are thinking Oregon. There are a lot of "off the beaten path" places. I ended up on a road (wrong turn) where we did not see another car, house, light pole, anything for over 3 hours!! I was up there a few years ago for 10 days and found fish everywhere we went. We flew into Portland then headed inland and just hit all the legal waters we found. The rivers and streams are what I was fishing there. Rainbows, steelhead, the fish were beautiful. Some of the area was a little rough for the 6 year old but I found plenty of areas where it was safe enough for the family to hang out while I went off to more remote spots.
Good luck and have a great vacation with the kids!!

I completely agree with the Bridgeport area. There are at least a dozen lakes in the are where you could use the boat and countless other lakes and streams. The fishing is usually very good in any of them. There are tons of campgrounds and several backcountry trailheads so you could get as remote as you wanted. It is not as crowded as Mammoth and all the scenic beauty you could imagine. I agree that Twin Lakes would be a great home base. But if you want to get up high, you have to check out the Virginia Lakes Basin. I've always thought it is the prettiest place in the Sierras. You could do a Google search and probably find lots of info. Or call the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce. Good luck, I'll be up there this weekend scouting for A20.

If you said your going to either of those states for the best fishing, i would without a doubt hit the Kolav Resevoir in UT. Slot limit of 2 fish between 18" and 24". Which in lamens terms means the fish are BIG! All wild cuthroat. And plenty of rainbow. Barbless lures only. No bait. Maybe not the best for the kids, but what a place, with the most gorgeous scenery and weather this time of year. Not to mention ballistic trout that rip line off those lil spools.
