Belize (Ambergris Caye)

Going on vacation down to Belize (Ambergris Caye) Nov 9 - 15, wanted to fish flats 1 day and either reef or offshore 1 day. Has anyone fished there before? Not too many charters to pick from. Any suggestions? What are typical charters like down there? I will need gear? Pricing$$$? Any tips or info would be really helpful.

It depends on where on Ambergris you are staying. The guides have an association pool from which they operate on daily and weekly basis. You will need to use your hotel's conceirge service.

Thanks for the info. I am staying at La Perla Del Caribe, I got some info from El Pescador about a charter to fish the flats.

You can fish for bone fish in front of most of the condos, on the south side of the island. On the north side you will need a boat to move around the mangroves. It seemed a little high for the guides, ($375.00 plus tip) and the gear they provided, ( not much and not maintained), if you want good gear take your own. Make sure to take sun screen, it is a burner on the water. Make sure you do a snorkling trip to the flats at Ho Chen, take an underwater camara, it is only 5 to 15 feet deep. Look deep into the coral and there are a lot of fish, large Groopers, lots of fish with teeth. baracouda, If you go off shore, do not go in a Pongo boat, they are to small to go over the reef and be safe if the wind comes up. Take your own life vest, they do not have them. Take wire leaders as the guides cannot afford them. You will get a lot more fish in the boat with wire leaders. Good Luck, enjoy the warm water. I always hired reef trips out of Victoria House call their US office: 713-344-2340
a) they are closest to the reef and b) cheap. Bonefish can be caught just about anywhere, anywhere they are not building homes and condos. Take small jigs (1/8-1/4 oz flatheads) and tip them with shrimp. Curly tails sometimes work, but bait is still the best.

I went earlier in the year and it was nice. I did an inshore trip for bone fish and it was pretty slow fishing, but had a good time. I would do a reef trip if I was you. Don't forget to snorkle while your there. Here's a report I made earlier in the year.
