So, I headed back up to Southeast Alaska this year. Specifically, to Point Protection and Wooden Wheel Lodge. (Sumner Strait area) I usually go earlier in the year, say June or July, but this year, it's mid-September. I went up to fish with Lyle at Wooden Wheel Lodge for a week or so, then Ms. Doughnut showed up for the final week. (her first trip fishing of any kind!) Getting there is an all day deal, flying from San Diego to Seattle, Seattle to Juneau, Juneau to Petersburg, then finally, a float plane out to the area. I will start of by saying that my past trips for the most part, have been blessed with great weather, sunny and warm. (except for brief periods of sideways rain!) This trip was a little different, fronts moving through bringing 40 knot gusts, small craft advisorys, and 5 foot seas. (Let me say somethng here about a five foot inside waters sea in SE Alaska, they come with about a one to two second interval as it is wind driven chop, so, very sporting. Does anybody know how to add text between the photos?????
So we fished relatively light gear, Seeker CJB70F/ Calcutta 700TE 50lb Braid. I have to give a shout to KK Swimbaits and Tommy for his UNI Butter. The Swimbaits (Chatreuse, Halloween, Anchovy with pearl belly) from Squidco , the fat ones, 7" and the combo of UNI Butter just kicked the ass of the traditional curly tail grubs. On one reef, we made 5 drifts and pulled 15 (Look at the pics, freaking TOADS) Lings in 15 lure drops. (all released) The slot this year was 30-35, and we could not catch fish SMALL enough!! MONSTER lings and rockfish, 30 pound class yellow eye. I'm telling you, the uni butter works, they just EAT the jig, I think they hold it longer and more aggressively to allow more reaction time for the FisherMan/Woman.
The Wooden Wheel Lodge is a great place, max 8 guests, great food, great Family run deal, can't say enough about the quality of folks.
I've said it before, if you haven't been to Alaska, get of your ass, save your dough, and freakin go. It is one of the most gorgeous places on this planet, really. I dont care where ya go up there, it's worth it. The guides etc that I have met up there are ALL first class pros. Go to Alaska, don't wait till your to fucking old to go and end up on some Cruise ship looking at it through binoculars.
Yes, Prince of Wales Island is gorgeous, Ill put up some pics of the streams etc. We took the skiff to the end of the road, and drove to Craig one day (120 + miles) What incredible scenery!
Hey Ken, I shit you not my lodge is right at the end of that rainbow in the picture you posted. The weather in Mid Sept. this year, like most others starts acting up. For the most part this year from Mid April to the first week in Sept. was outstanding. Just got to California 3 days ago, got to say the weather when I left was suckin. Lyle sold his place last week. Guess he is headed south a bit. Next time your up stop in and I'll toss a couple back with ya.
