I would recommend fishing on Vancouver Island.

I am going to Tahsis on July 26th for 2 days and expect to get into large halibut and some medium sized Chinook and Coho.

This is the guy I fish with: www.sentrycharters.com

You may have some trouble booking someone this late in the year - all the good guides are booked before the season starts.

Here's what you can expect for each of the summer months:

July - start of fishing for salmon & halibut - monster halibut & average salmon
although I have heard that this year there are much larger Chinook coming in
many fish in the 30 to 40 lb range already

August - start of fishing in the Fraser river. There is an expected 4 week
opening for Sockeye starting Aug 1 - beautiful fish/easy to catch -
wet wading in shorts & sandals.

August is the best month for fishing for Chinook on VanIsle. Expect
fish over 30lbs - I catch atleast one over 30lbs every year.

Also, the Coho fishing is insane on the west coast of VanIsle. Most
the time you hook a Coho while dropping the downrigger to the Chinooks.
You can see dozens of them finning on the surface and can easily catch
them by bucktailing a spoon 20' behind the boat

For my buddy's stag a couple of years ago, we took the last ferry out of Tsawassen over to the island in Nanaimo (11:00 pm I think). Drove to Port Alberni from there (about an hours drive from the ferry terminal) and slept in the car till about 5:00 am. Right now there are limits of sockeye salmon in the inlet to be had. Or you could drive an hour and a half further west to Uclulet on the west coast and go for some fabulous chinook and halibut fishing. You will be done by early afternoon and take the ferry back home the same day. I don't sleep much the night before a big fishing trip anyways, so its no big deal. My buddies and I used to do this once a year when the limits on chinook use to be 4 per person per day. We would bring back 12 chinooks and 6 halibut for the three of us for only 4 hours of fishing!

Heading to Tofino, B.C. on the west coast of Vancouver Island tonight. Will stay in Vancouver tonight, then catch a float plane into Tofino on Friday, then fish a half day. I then am scheduled to fish all day on Saturday and Sunday, before starting my journey back home on Monday. Fishing and the weather is suppossed to be really good. Can't wait to get out there. If anyone has any advice, let's hear it!
