if you are going in oct. then there are only a few charters still kicking around, but the fishing for coho can still be good to excellent with big northern averaging about 10 pounds and some push closer to 20 (depending on location). bottom fishing is also available (hali, ling, rock cod, etc.). Crabbing on the island is generally via boat, but in some towns and cities there is decent crabbing off docks or piers (very tide dependant-fish a couple hrs before and during the flood).
for fall, i would actually advocate staying off the salt and focusing on the super fishery that exists in the rivers with various species of salmon running up the rivers. You can most definitely fish from shore and have good success. The river/drift fishery can be as easy as shooting fish in a barrel at times, but to be good takes time to understand how the proper gear and technique to work to increase the success rate. Std gear in Canadian Pac NW is a 10.5' casting rod (10-20#) with a 400 series level wind packed with 15-20# quality mono. Same set up for bottom bouncing (only a few spots in some sections of rivers), mostly float/drift fishing.
if you are a beginner to float fishing, most definitely go to local shop prior to outing and glean and gear up.
P.S. leave the spinning gear at home for this fishery (horrible drift control and line control -- use a quality level wind or center pins)
